Well I'm a very very very new fan. I'm a great fan of ballet but what with my injuries it didn't work out for me in the past. But I try not to miss any ballet shows on tv. And last sunday, 9th, something caught my eye on channel thirteen. So I started watching it. It was Swan Lake and I caught it right when the prince and the girlfriend were going to the play with the queen. It was oh so interesting. And then he appeared. I mean It was impossible to see the beauty of his dance. With is bare feet and chest magnificent dance.... WoW. Then of course he appeared in leather pants... Have Mercy. Don't get me wrong I'm not another teenager drooling over some hot guy, I just fell in love with his amazing dances. In a great mood I went to the PBS site to find out who the heck this guy was and I found out that it was this guy named Adam Cooper. SO I thought "Cool, I wonder if he has other works." And he did. But I was in a ballet mood. So I decided that I should rent "Billy Elliot" because for the longest time I wanted to see that movie. And I almost had an heat-attack at the end. In ONE DAY I saw this amazing guy twice and all by accident. I'm just thrilled. And I'm looking forward to see more of his works.

   Dear Blackrose,

Thought you might like to know that Bruce has asked Karen & I to interview Adam Cooper for this website, and although it has taken some time to co-ordinate, we hope to organise it soon.

Is there anything else you would like to know or ask, in case we need to include it in our interview?

I was going to say, that's rather a non-sequitur, isn't it? And rather irrelevant, although it's publicly recorded. As Arnold Haskell said in "Balletomania - Then and Now", "... in the case of ballet it is not sexual habits that are relevant, but the appearance of virility."

5. "Questions?? Where should I start??!!"
In response to message #2

I'm so excited... OK I'm a little bit on the excited stage so I'm gonna list a couple of questions hoping that you wouldn't mind.
Well here goes...

1. What's a good age to start ballet if one wants to persue the dream of achieving spectacular performances on stage. (better than starving on the street. lol.) Honest, HONEST, opinion though. I mean to be kind he can be like, "Well, if you really like it you can achieve that any time." <-- this answer won't do.
2. When did he start ballet?
3. What interested him in ballet?
4. Future plans?
5. Would he concider being a ballet teacher?
6. Would he concifer working with beginer and older "wannabe" ballet dancers? (when I say older I mean my age which is 16)
7. How did it feel like to play the SWAN in the modern version of Swan Lake?

Thank you so so so so so so so so very much to let me ask some questions!!!!!

BlackRose: I have a spare tape I could GIVE you for free! It's a PAL version so you'd have to get it converted for US video, which I believe is pretty easy. If you would like it, e-mail me your address and I'll send it pronto. May take a little while, post between UK and US being a little slow, but you can have it for the rest of your life .

If you want other tapes which feature Adam dancing, he appears in supporting roles in Mayerling (the Mukhamedov/Durante version and Winter Dreams (again with Mukhamedov, Bussell and Durante). Try the Dance Books website at http://www.dancebooks.co.uk.

I was not disappointed to hear that you were only interested in Adam Cooper’s dancing.
Last year for The London Studio Centre, Images of Dance Tour round the UK he was listed as Director of Boys, presumable a teaching position. He was certainly at the performance I went too as he sat in the next row. He did some choreography for that company and as you probably know is now doing more choreography, for ballet and for musicals. He sometimes forms his own temporary ballet company for the Exeter Music festival. I hope he proves to be a good choreographer as they are in short supply. People who saw him in On Your Toes said he sang well and is a good tap dancer.

   Dear BlackRose,

Karen & I are also trying to set up an interview with Scott Ambler, but sometimes he is almost as hard to contact as Adam has been. I don't mean that as a criticism of either of them, however, as I know it's because they both work so hard.

Hopefully, I might be able to make contact with Scott in late August (if not before) as I'm certain he is working with Matthew Bourne on the first production Matthew is creating for his new company New Adventures (entitled "Play Without Words") which opens at the National Theatre towards the end of August.

If he hasn't already read them on this site, I'll pass on your admiration for his abilities!

Amazon.com has the ballet on DVD as well as VHS - then Ann won't have to go the trouble of sending a copy all the way from England. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304666799/qid=1025714087/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/102-2986334-7736167

is the URL for the VHS. If you do a search on amazon for Adam Cooper you can find both versions. For as many times as I viewed this ballet, I strongly reccomend the DVD version - no rewinding to see the good parts over and over.

I, too, am an Adam Cooper fan (who isn't?) I am looking forward to your interview. Please let me know when it is posted. I love this web site. We have nothing like it in the US.
I just saw the Bolshoi Ballet yesterday (La Bayadere), at the Kennedy Center in DC. Anna Antonicheva, as Nickia, was phenomenal, so light. She outshone everyone in the ballet. It being their final performance, many of dancers seemed to be just going through the motions. I must say their corps de ballet are the most synchronized of any I have ever seen. The Shades act was beautiful. The crowd loved Denis Medvedev as the Golden Idol, he was very athletic.
Greatly looking forward to the Adam interview. Does anyone know if and when he'll be in the US?

I did not speak to Adam Cooper, I do not think he would want to speak to an old geezer like me. By chance I bumped into him and his wife Sarah Wildor about three times last year, I hope he did not think I was following him around. I even found out that his dad teaches a friends daughter.

I am going to Exeter on Sat 6th and would be happy to meet up with any other fans of Adam and Sarah. If you are travelling from London let me know.
I'm impressed with Blackrose's sheer enthusiasm and admit that when I watch Adam dancing I feel that way too!
Swan Lake was my first introduction , and I really regret missing all those opportunities to have seen him performing with The Royal Ballet in the past .However , Ive now seen his 'Onegin ' which was superb, and the wonderful 'On Your Toes' in Leicester.(saw it 3 times, the last night was so great!)
If you do have a chance to interview Adam for Ballet postings please ask him for a diary of future events!
THis is my first message ,sorry its so long, but its nice to meet some other Cooper fans.I have met him briefly to ask for an autograph and he was very charming.

re: Exeter Dear AnnaM I will look out for you 7pm at box office
I am very tall so you can look out or up ! for me.Luckily I found an old school pal Jill who lives nearby and have managed to get her a ticket too.
Last week I went to see the Images of Dance (graduates of the London Studio Centre.) Adam choreographed The Bawdy Song Travellers (see reviews site)I thought it was a very original
piece with a terrific sense of humour set to Tudor style Olde English songs, with folk dancing in flat slippers.
The Balanchine Stars and Stipes was also excellent.I managed to
say hello to AC in the bar , lucky me.

I promise these questions will be asked at the interview. At last we have a date! I don't want to jinx anything but I can tell you that it is happening very soon.

Thanks Karen. Please would you let him know that some fans travel internationally to see him dance (not just a train to Exeter!)
so I reckon that better publicity is a must. This probably applies to most freelance dancers though , who may not know dates very far ahead themselves perhaps ?

He is aware of the desire for information and without pre-empting anything I can say that we hope to remedy this before too long. Gosh, how enigmatic that sounds, but I can't say more at the moment.

All we can say at the moment is that Karen & I have now talked to Adam, and Karen is writing up the interview as we speak (if I know my Karen!) Just one further point I feel we should make: there will be one last slight delay before you'll be able to read the interview for yourselves (I'm sorry, we're not deliberately trying to tantalise you). The reason for this final little hold-up is that we want to show the completed write-up to Adam for his approval before submitting it to Bruce for publication. I know this may not be normal practice, but Karen & I are not professional journalists, and we felt it was only polite to extend this courtesy to all the people we interview in return for their time. We'll try to get through this process as soon as possible.

I do hope that you consider the final result to be worth the wait. I certainly found the meeting with Adam illuminating as well as great fun. Our thanks go to him and to the ROH for helping to organise this interview.

Just wondering if you have an idea of when your interview will be published.
I am really looking forward to it.
Thanks

   Dear Corrival,

Sorry to take a while to respond, but I've been away for a bit. The answer to your question lies with Bruce, but as far as I'm aware, he intends to include it in the next Ballet.co Magazine.

Hope you enjoy it when you can finally read it (although as soon as we'd left Adam, both Karen and I realised there were still loads of things we'd meant to ask him but had run out of time - perhaps we'll have to do a second interview?!)

Best wishes, Jane N.

Regretfully, Adam himself said that he would be unable to do the most recently scheduled performances for Mayerling because of other commitments, but we did let him know that we all wanted to see him dance it again if a future opportunity arose.
