"Free tickets for schoolchildren?"
I noticed last week that Culture Minister Chris Smith mentioned the possibility of arts companies being forced to give away unsold tickets to schoolchildren if they wanted to keep their government grants. A nice idea, but would they get compensation for lost income from standbys etc. on the day? Presumably it wouldn't be *all* the spare tickets, though, just those the companies projected that they wouldn't be able to sell.

What does anyone else think of the idea?

It is a good idea in principal but I would think it is rather impractical. Most works that do not sell tend to be the more esoteric works which school children would not like. Perhaps if they extended the scheme to university students it would be more workable. But then the companies might loose business. I wonder how many tickets to Swan Lake will the RB happily give away!
