LAST EDITED ON 03-Jun-99 AT 06:19 PM (GMT)

Well folks the time is nigh! Actually the time has been and gone...

Sharp eyed readers of the 'This Week' page will know that we are changing our Postings Page this week. Well... its happened and you might want to print this message out because it has some useful bits and bobs about the new board.

If you are reading this on our old postings board, that's just fine.. but the board does not accept new posts anymore and all the action is taking place on the new board. Don't worry - all the latest messages are there and ready.

You can use the link at the top of this page to get to the new board or here is the URL:

http://www.danze.co.uk/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi

So you are wondering...

Why are they doing this?
What do we do to post things?
Where can I find more information about the new board?
Where can I get help if it is all terribly wrong?

I'll take each of these in turn....

Why are we doing this:

(i) we have had grim performance problems at times in the past and a newer board should not suffer so much (but the web is a strange place of course!)
(ii) the new board is split up into areas (Forums) and this will enable us to have many more concurrent discussions running and also make it easier to find information
(iii) the new board can display all the postings in a thread in one page - imagine not having to open up each posting individually! This is probably the biggest single benefit of the new board.
(iv) the new board also handles old posts much better and they won't 'disappear' after 8 days as they seem to do at the moment
(v) the new board can show you just the postings that have been made since you last looked in - brilliant! You have to register to do this though.
(vi) if you register you are don't have to type your name and email address every time you post something. Like TV remotes and electric windows you will wonder how you lived without this!
(vii)URL's are automatically converted into hot links - no more cut and paste. HTML can also be embedded (for those who know it) and smileys automatically get converted into neat little icons (as you will see if you are reading this on the new board)
(viii) *new edit* And you can edit your messages if you spot a typo or want to add soemthing!
(ix)Er... and we are not doing the change to make your life more difficult - even though over the next few days you might think so...

Drawbacks to the new Board:

Just like video recorders any new postings board can take some time to fully learn - so many options! It is bound to take a while for everybody to get used to the new facilities so do please persevere. No pain, no gain as they say. And don't forget that you don't have to use every last facility on the new board at first. Simple posting is easy and we have deliberately laid out the new board to be similar to the old.

What do you do to Post Things:

When you first arrive you will see all the forums which we have split things up into. The main two forums at the moment are:

What's Happening
{Gossip, thoughts and reviews (of productions, dance companies, videos or whatever). If you are not so sure where to put something, then post here!}
&
News, Company and venue information
{A chance for those providing dance, and dance lovers, to give up to the minute news, press releases, cast changes and special offer details.}

At some point in the future we will add more. In addition we have a 'Test Forum' - somewhere you can practice posting and replying and an 'About us' forum - this is where you can ask questions about Ballet.co or, more importantly at the moment, about how the new postings page works.

Lets post a new message in the test forum. Use the link at the top of the page to get to the new postings page. Click on the 'Test Forum' link to go into that forum. Then click on the Post icon, it's near the top.. A postings page comes up, fill in the details, press the 'Post Message' button and you are done. If you had wanted to reply to a message then you would have used the reply icon next to the message you wanted to respond to.

Where can I find more information about the new board:

At the top of most pages is a Help icon - click on that and a page full of information about the new board comes up - its worth printing off, because it tells you about all the facilities and how users typically use them. Here is the URL of the Help page if you want to go straight there:

http://www.danze.co.uk/cgi-bin/dcforum/help.cgi

Speaking from personal experience you won't be able to take in all the facilities at once - it will take a few days for things to sink in and for the convenience to emerge. But from day one you know how to post and that's the most important thing.

A Note about Registration - you don't have to!

You don't have to register or give us any information you don't want to. We have gone out of our way to make this the case and the new board is no more demanding than the old in this respect. So you can type in silly user names, not worry about email address etc if you don't want. That said we want you to respect the board and prefer people to post with their proper details (which has always been our position).

All that said... it's worth registering. Apart from making it easier to post, because you don't have to keep entering your name and email details each time you post, it also allows you to see all the posts that have been made since you last looked in on the postings page. More details on this are on the new Postings Help page (see below).

Note: Users should note that Ballet.co will not use your email address or other details indiscriminately or pass to third parties for example. We believe that email address entered on our old Postings page, in the two years it has existed, have not been abused by anybody and we have no intention of seeing the new postings facilities be any different.

Where can I get help if it is all terribly wrong:

If you can read posts and make posts then go into the 'About us' Forum and ask your question there - we should respond within a few hours.

If you can't post for some reason then email me: bruce@ballet.co.uk

The new board represents an awful lot of time and effort and you would not believe the number of boards we have looked at in detail before selecting it. Indeed we were within days of taking another board live before we discovered a fatal problem. The new board won't be perfect, but just bloody good will do!

Tally Ho and see you on the new page

Bruce

Looks very good Bruce! For those of us familiar with www.balletalert.com this format will be easy to work with. I think this should increase the ballet-related conversation across the pond. It seems to be quite painless and efficient to post, and edit.

Congratulations on being the first to post and glad you like it. I have to say that it's the mini-poll addition that I love!
