"Michael OíHareís Last Performance "
Michael OíHareís Last Performance as a BRB Principal

Last night, at the Birmingham Hippodrome, Michael OíHare danced for the final time as a Principal dancer with BRB. His entire career has been with BRB and, over the years, he has danced all the major roles, both in the classics and in the more modern ballets. From so much, it is hard to pick out the highlights, but most will agree that he ranks with the very greatest in parts where dancing is used to illuminate and define character. In recent years, David Bintley has created a number of memorable roles on him. The two finest and the ones to remember him by have been Gabriel Oak in Far From The Madding Crowd and, especially, Will in Hobsonís Choice. It was entirely fitting that he danced the latter role last night.

He has always been enormously popular with BRBís audience and so last night was quite an emotional occasion. Most of the other BRB Principals were in the cast, there were lots of flowers and a standing ovation.

I would like to endorse Terry's comments about Michael's final performance as a principal with BRB on Saturday. Michael gave a totally committed performance as Will Mossop which was a joy to behold. And with joy is how I will always remember Michael's dancing. The role of Mossop was a perfect vehicle for him and it was fitting that Desmond and Marion were also on stage. Michael's last performance as a principal marks the end of an era at BRB and fortunately he is not severing the link totally but will continue with the company he has served so well over the years. As a dancer, Michael can never be replaced. In his new role he can pass on some of his artistry. And that is just how it should be.

I quite agree with you. I don't think Hobson's Choice will be quite the same without him, but at least we have his performance captured on video to treasure (and I do!). So sorry he's retiring, but very glad he's continuing with the company.
