"Poulenc: Double Piano Concerto:"

LAST EDITED ON 22-05-02 AT 03:45 PM (GMT)

Has anyone, other than Christopher Hampson, choreographed a ballet to Poulenc's Double Piano Concerto? There has been a suggestion that Ashley Page may have done, but I'm not sure. Is anyone else?

Hampy's version is really worth seeing if you haven't already. ENB are at the Opera House next week.

Graham Lustig did Paramour in the late 80s for SWRB - in a Parisian salon for Tait, Yow, Samsova. Excellent.

Think this is right! Came to SW in 1987 and revived later too.

Stephen Baynes for the Australian Ballet.
It was performed at the Coliseum the last time the company came to London.

Strange as it may seem, the answer is on Ballet.co's own pages - it was Ashley Page's Sawdust and Tinsel (1998). More info on http://www.ballet.co.uk/magazines/yr_98/nov98/interview_ashley_page.htm

Yes, but IIRC he didn't use the whole work but other Poulenc (eg slow mvmt of Clarinet Sonata). Not sure why he bothered to mix and match as Poulenc only had one slow movement... also only one opening mvmt... but hey, I love his stuff so what the heck!

I've been wracking my brains all week trying to think, because I'm sure there's another ballet to the music apart from the ones already mentioned, but I still can't remember what it is.

Anyway, just to back up Brendan's comments on the ENB triple bill at the Royal Opera House this coming Friday and Saturday, I went trawling through the archives and found that Bruce had done a very useful summary of the critics' comments on Double Concerto, so here it is:

http://www.ballet.co.uk/magazines/yr_02/feb02/bm_rev_enb_0102.htm

I had a quick skim through some of the reviews of the rest of the bill as well, although my computer seems unusually slow today, but these are the ones I managed to get at:

Did hunt out the programme - of course, it was Bruce who wrote the programme notes - but nothing about other works to the same music, so I guess I shall just have to go on wondering ....

You are undoubtedly thinking of Hernando Cortez's "Unquiet Minds" choreographed for ABT II in the late 1990s.

Choo-San Goh choreographed the Poulenc; the ballet was called "Double Contrasts" (Washington Ballet, early 1980s).

I've checked the most recent Les Biches programme (RB) which has a good article by Noel Goodwin about Poulenc and ballet, but nothing new to add to what has been posted here.
