"New Mini poll on favourite dancers:"

Who is your favourite female dancer? Limiting this to ballerinas who have danced in London in the last couple years or have guested from overseas. Nominations for non-principals are encouraged!

Suggestions so far...

Sylvie Guillem
Tamara Rojo
Alina Cojocaru
Darcey Bussell
Monica Zamara
Zenaida Yanowsky
Yuan Yuan Tan
Sabine Chaland
Lisa Viola
Sabrina Brazzo
Agnes Oaks
Uliana Lopatkina

If you don't see your favourite here then POST or she won't be on the mini-poll!! There can only be 10 so I'll need to pick based on whoever gets the most popular reponses. Deadline is !!

To see the other thread go here http://www.danze.co.uk/dcforum/happening/2700.html. If you have any more ideas for mini polls then it's fine to keep posting on that thread or to email me. Thanks for the ideas so far guys, I'll work them into future mini-polls.

Btw Bruce, I think Vivana might be fine as she was in the Dowell Gala last year, no?

I'm a mild sort of person, and I certainly don't want to upset the apple-cart or digress from the current mini-poll. But why is everything geared up to people who live within spitting distance of the ROH?

OK, some of us provincials (and there are a fair few of us on the ballet.co site now) have the time, and a considerable bit of spare cash, to chance the vagaries of Railtrack and depend on it to get us to the show on time (plus maybe the cost of a night's B&B). But we are only going to pay out all that extra cash on top of an ROH ticket to see a particular dancer performing in a particular role for one night only.

So, casting a vote for a "your favourite ROH ballerina" would be heavily biased because there would be no room for comparison.

I don't at the moment have any suggestions for a mini-poll as to how to get over this problem. Maybe a future poll for suggestions from those of us who live out in the sticks? And maybe a separate thread?

Sorry to rant. Had to get it off my chest

It's fine and proper(!) to have a rant Ann - there's much more to dance and ballet in the UK then just the main stage at Covent Garden and I for one have always been keen to see other companies covered and discussed.

And your right that we do need a balance on Mini-pollls so that it's not all London/SE. The one thing that we're pretty clear on is not to have lots of separate forums and ghetos. For what its worth this poll is abaout London rather then just RB and as such I think BRB, ENB and NBT have played in London the last 2 years. Also Rambert and a stream of other companies. But the point is well made - there is life beyond RB/London.

To help make the point even better we need more of those lurkers out there - particulalry eleswhere in the UK - to actually start contributing thoughts and observations and raising new debates. I love seeing reviews of companies that are rarely commented on and never reviewed nationaly. We must have a 100+ reviews of RB R&J and yet other companies go unseen and unrecorded while giving apparent pleasure to many.

So you non-Londoners - please post!

Yes, but they don't dance in the North east. They did in the mid 90s (my first ever ballet was NBT's R&J, at my local theatre, and I saw ENB there a year later) but now... I go to Leeds or Canterbury (I have grandparents there - my geography isn't that bad) to see NBT, but I haven't seen ENB since 1995.

For me there are two different sorts of trips to the ROH: those that my parents pay for, and those that I pay for out of paper delivering/ working in Pizza Hut (I'm going to be late now, and the harridan from number 17 will complain again). With these trips I cannot afford an overnight stay, so I see a matinee. This means that I do see casts that I wouldn't choose to see.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in your choice of subject for a poll. Favourite female dancer sounds to me uncomfortably like some kind of balletic beauty contest as surely the term "favourite" indicates a bias towards a particular dancer that is pretty meaningless in terms of personal excellence. I suspect that many of the "fans" will be swayed by who has been friendliest towards them at the stage door of the opera house.

Perhaps Which Female Dancer Has Given The Most Outstanding Performance In The Last Two Years might give a more interesting result, particularly if supporters are prepared to argue why.

Yuan-Yuan Tan in "Magrittomania" and Alina Cojocaru in "Giselle".

MAB, the poll is only meant to be semi-serious but I take your point about the question not encouraging enough discussion and I like the question you suggested. I'll definitely keep this in mind in future polls. But I don't think you give enough credit to the posters here who I'm sure will vote for dancers on their own dancing merits. I can't change it now - the idea of the other thread on new polls was to get poll ideas and tinker with the wording. I still appreiate the feedback though and I hope you'll keep it coming.

Sylvia

What strikes me in this poll is that it's likely to be biased towards certain dancers, simply because there have been so many more chances to see them than others (assuming that we *are* actually voting based on performances that we've seen in the last 2 years rather than ones prior to that date). For instance, I would expect, say, one of the RB's major ballerinas, dancing 20 or 30 major performances over that time to houses of 2000+, to poll rather more heavily than a Bolshoi ballerina who's only been seen in a few pas de deux in a half-full Theatre Royal, or, for that matter, someone like Lopatkina, who if I remember correctly was injured for quite a bit of the Kirov season. And people who have been unable to journey to London during that period will have a very limited choice of dancers to vote for. We shall see ...

I always thought Deborah Bull was wonderful and severely under-rated in the classics. Her Swan Lake was one of the most moving I ever saw, particularly her last ones with Inaki Urlezaga, even if her technical strength as Odile wasn't quite what it had been at the Coliseum a few Summers ago. For a combination of musicality, intelligence and artistic integrity there have been few to match her for me.

I have to agree with James H J here. Deborah Bull must be in the poll. But as well as the classics, Symbionts was for me simply the most exciting thing I have seen on any stage for a long time.

Indeed it was and foolish of me to overlook (I think I caught a matinee after flying back from a performance of my own in Germany that morning so was perhaps not at my most concentrated). In addition to her wonderful talent, I feel she also needs mentioning for the way in which she has brought dance, both classical and otherwise, to a wider public in both an educational and performing manner. Art should enlargen, enliven and entertain (the motto here at the Royal Danish Theatre translates as 'Not only for pleasure') and she is a first rate advocate of that maxim.

Although Deborah Bull always blew me away in solo roles, the one time I saw her in a lead role (and I deliberately booked for her because I'd been so enchanted by her performances in solo roles) she left me underwhelmed (it was Odette/Odile). I found her small jump a serious defect in this role and she also didn't really project a character - this was a great surprise to me as she had always been the one you just HAD to watch on stage before. Did I catch her on an "off" day? (25 October 1995, if anyone was there...)

I don't have an answer Anneliese - I never got to see her in principal roles in the big ballets. But I was curious if anyone here had seen her Aurora as well. She only danced 3 in total if I remember rightly from her book. What about her Kitri - what was she like?

First massive thanks to Sylvia for taking us all on in this way!

The new poll is just up - for technical reasons I have to take it live at the moment rather than Sylvia. It was a long list of over 20 dancers and that had to come down to 10.... so sorry in advance from us both. Sometimes I think we ought to have a poll for who gets into the poll.

Do please keep adding your thoughts on this poll below please. thank you.

I voted "Other" for Miyako - it was tough deciding between her and Alina (I haven't seen Viviana in a long time so ruled her out) but decided that Miyako had given me more great pleasure in more performances than anyone else who can regularly be seen in London. Maybe Alina will challenge that one day but I didn't feel that I could vote for her on the strenght of being enchanted by her "awakening" pdd and bowled over by her Tatiana. So many of today's dancers are very much horses for courses that it's hard to choose a favourite (unless we're talking male dancers, who are much more versatile, but then again I have a far shorter shortlist of those I'd cross continents to see anyway!)
