"Next Mini-poll"

There's not been a lot of change on the Mini-poll front for some time now - a great shame I reckon.

Well I'm pleased to say that Sylvia is going to sort us all out on polls. Goodness knows how she will find the time amidst her exams, far too many Romeo and Juliet's and her reviewing!!

Do give Sylvia your support in all this - coming up with new polls and options is not so straightforward I think. And if you wonder why we are so keen to get things going smoothly again do have a look at some of our earlier polls. Here's a starter for ten:

Over to Sylvia...

Thanks Bruce. Looking for new ideas for the mini-polls so please post or do email me!

Some ideas while I think of something more original...I thought it would be nice to repeat a poll on favourite dancers since the last one we had was in 2000 and it would be interesting to see how tastes have changed (Rojo had a tiny minority of votes back then!).

It would also be fun to do something a little timely on Romeo and Juliet since we have had performances by the RB, ENB and BRB this year, and three different versions (MacMillan, Nureyev and Deane) within the last 12 months. Or we could have a go at the all time R&J greats.

And what Ricardo Cervera said about preferring secondary roles to principal ones because they were more interesting, I found fascinating. Perhaps a poll on secondary roles you'd most like to dance would be fun.

So any ideas/opinions please!

What about the worst music for dance? I suggest four helicopters for a start.

That bad, huh Robert? When I went to see 'In the middle', the music REALLY upset some of the people around me (though I like it quite a lot).

Another idea I had was whether seeing Carmen a few weeks ago would make you want to see more of Ek's work danced by the RB. Or which one of his ballets you would like to be staged here next. If any. Hard to tell how many people even went given that the other ballets were recent repeats.

I think we are getting away from the thread, but I was seriously put off 'In the Middle' by the lack of music. I enjoyed the Matt Ek as I enjoyed 'She was Black', but next time I will give Forsythe a miss and not bother to book for anything that looks as thought the music might be canned and lousy.

Well I'm keen to see a new poll so I think it would be great if we could resurect this one in some way. But what list would we have by way of fav dancers? Perhaps narrow it to ballerinas. Would we have the same names as before? - suspect that things will have moved on some though. Also is it UK company based or wider? Questions questions I know!

I think it would be a good to use the same criteria as before - ballerinas who have danced in London in the last couple years or have guested from overseas - it would be fun to make some comparisons to the old one. Nominations for non-principals would nice but I worry the list might get a little long and we can't do more than 10!

Just to get things started...

Sylvie Guillem
Tamara Rojo
Alina Cojocaru

Anyone else?

The Bussell has to have a slot. I'd also mention Monica Zamora and Zenida Yanowsky

The 2 year criteria means the Kirov is in of course. Sadly it also means that Viviana Durante is not in (she did a few Manon's with RB early in 2000)

And then there was SFB - Yuan Yuan Tan for me but I could understand other choices too

Unlikely to make the cut perhaps but I well remember Sabine Chaland in van Manen's 'Live' (presented by DNB)

And Lisa Viola from the Paul Taylor company was a revelation...

   Some poll ideas

Which is your favourite picture as featured in the ballet.co screen saver? (You DO have the screen saver don't you?)

Which ballets created in the last 10 years will still be performed in 100+ years time? Don't forget Swan Lake was 125 years old this year.

Which (if any) of todays choreographers will be remembered in the future in the same manner as Peitpa and Ivanov?

We have all heard of Fanny Elssler and Marie Taglioni. Which of today's crop will be heard of in 100 years time?

What is the best excuse that you have used for not being able to execute the perfect brise (or whatever)? (My favourite is "my double piroutte is in my other leotard".)

   How about.....

1) What would you say to Ross Stretton given half a chance?

or

2) Is he achieving the goals he set himself and if not why do you think not? (Since somewhere else people suggested lack of diversity in principal dancers, limited repetoire etc.)

It seems to be as a non dancer that Ross Stretton has actually made a very good start. The standard of dancing seems high and he is making an effort to respect Royal Ballet traditions of repertoire whilst exploring new choreography. Casting can seem a little unimaginative (must it always be the same four or five principal couples) and it must be galling for those senior soloists being taken out of the principal roles which they danced under the previous Management. It is also a worrying trend (whích started under Dowell too) that principal dancers are now being brought in rather than necessarily promoted from within. Perhpas this internationalisation of style is inevitable in our current global scheme of things. However, it is also important to remember that the Australian Ballet School's syllabus is, apparently, closer to what Dame Ninette de Valois instigated (via the Helpmann input) than what was developed by Dame Merle Park in recent years. He and Gailene Stock may not be so alien to our heritage as might be thought.
