"Young British Dancer of the Year"

At a BRB Trust luncheon today, David Bintley said that on Sunday he was a judge in the above competition. Was there anyone there who can tell us what happened?

Not sure if you are looking for info from a particular angle, but here is a general summary.
The award, for male and females aged 15-17 and in it's third year, held the semi-final and final in the Linbury Studio Theatre on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th respectively.
Although many schools entered (with the notable exception of the ENBS - anyone know why?), 30 of the 32 semi-finalists were from the RBS. One was independent and one was from the Riley School of Dance. 85 dancers entered the competition in total.

It should be noted that the winner in 2000 was a certain Jamie Bond, who I know several people on ballet.co are quite excited about, and in 2001 the winner was Lauren Cuthbertson. Both are now with the RB.

Prizes included 5 summer and easter scholarships from schools including BRB, ENB and Rambert, for dancers form non-vocational schools not necessarily in the final, two book prizes (I'm guessing for a kind of fourth and fifth place, though this wasn't clear) and then 500 for 3rd place, 1500 for second and 2500 for first place. Worth winning! Oh, and a year's subscription to Dancing Times for all three.

11 boys and 21 girls made the semis and 4 boys and 12 girls were selected for the final by a jury chaired by John Neumeier, Director of Hamburg Ballet Company and School, also containing Cynthia Harvey, former RB principal and Kevin O'Hare, former principal of BRB. Judging the final was a stellar crew also consisting of David Bintley, Matz Skoog and Ross Stretton.
The dancers performed one variation in the semi-final and two in the final - mostly the usual Sleeping Beauty fairies, Sugar Plums and Swan Lake pas de trois variations.

Although I seemed to have mislaid my finals programme, I believe the winners were: 1st - Anniek Soobroy, 17 (despite an inadvisable and unfortunate fake tan); 2nd - Nicholas Reeves, 17; 3rd - Laurence Rigg, 16. All are from the RBS.

Personally I would say that Anniek was certainly the most accomplished technical dancer on show with genuine jetes and extensions, and although the exact criteria for success were unknown, it would have been difficult to not award her the main prize. Nicholas was a good all-round dancer and Laurence showed a great sense of innate musicality and feeling that is impossible to be either taught or learnt - he is born with it and hopefully will be able to build on the technical aspects in the year to come and flourish into a very fine dancer indeed. Interesting to note that two of the three winners were boys.

Overall, two very enjoyable evenings and I would look to attend again next year - but to truly be taken seriously (and to carry on using the same name with a straight face), the competition must include the exceptional dancers at the ENBS. Now that would be a great competition to watch. Hopefully, Skoog being involved this year is a good sign.

Hope that was enough info - write again if you have any further questions. I shall find my finals programme at some point, no doubt.

Thank you very much. You have given me the information I wanted.

I don't want to reopen the massive set of postings we had last year about the RBS, which did involve some mention of the competition, but it will be sad if no other school but the RBS puts its dancers forward.

It would be interesting to know how many entries were from other schools.

I certainly know that from speaking to other parents that this com is still viewed very much as a RBS event with very few if any students from other schools getting anywhere.

This is very unfortunate as we need to promote the huge amount of talent that exsists at ALL collages/schools.

There does seem to be a feeling that only students from RBS get through to the later stages.

We need to promote a truely open competition that attracts the best from all the independant collages in the UK

And no, I also do not wish to open a debate that knocks the RBS, they do after all have some wonderful young dancers, but so do other collages.

   Hello,

Taken from the programme , a list of schools who had participants in the cpmpetition.

Ballet West , Bernadette Sloan , Central School of Ballet , Dance School of Scotland , Dansarena Studios , Dorothy Marshall School of Dance and Drama , Dupont Dance School , Julia Noble Chool of Dance and Drama , London Studio Centre , Lynn Wardell Scool of Dancing , Mayhew Scool of Dancing , Oundle School of Ballet , Riley Scool of Dance and Performing Arts , The Royal Ballet School , Susan Robinson School of Ballet , Tiffany's Academy , Variotions Dance Studio, Western School of Dancing , Wheathamstead Dance Acadany.

All the 16 finalists came from the RBS , apart from Elizabeth Garret aged 16, taught by Joanne Bond( who if I am not mistaken is Jamie Bonds mother , Jamie being a previous winner of this competion and now a Royal Ballet dancer). This is the second year in a row that Elizabeth was the only non RBS participant in the final, and this year was awarded with a BRB scolarship.

The winner,A Soobray was the clear winner ,having far stronger technique than the other dancers. In last years competition she had finished 3rd.

I did think the overall standard had improved greatly since last year and look forward to this competion being continued.

Thanks should go to Ricki Gail Conway who has sponsered the competition since its inception.

Tace Care

David
