"'A week at the Ballet' on Radio 3"

Just in case anyone has the opportunity of listening to Radio 3 at 11-30 a.m. each morning this week, there is a series of programmes in the Morning Performance slot (till 1-00 p.m. each day) consisting of ballet music introduced by David Bintley. Today’s programme included Giselle, Sylvia, La Bayadere, Swan Lake, and Ondine. Tuesday will be about Balanchine’s ballets (Bach, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky); Wednesday is for Soviet Russia (Shostakovitch, Khachaturian, Prokofiev); Thursday connects Nijinsky, Tudor, Graham, and Béjart with Debussy, Mahler, Copland, and Ravel; and the series concludes on Friday with an all-Stravinsky programme (The Fairy’s Kiss, Petrushka, and Agon).

I came across the first programme by chance this morning; it’s good to have the links provided by someone of Bintley’s authority.

Happy listening!

Well I just have to use this as a plug for Pete's weekly posting (in the News section) about Ballet and Dance and whats on the Radio and TV!

Pete does a terrific job and this programme is one of the ones he covered. This weeks link is at:

And I too enjoyed the Bintley appraoch. He knows how to 'reach' people. (or connect if you prefer new labour speak!)

   Odette
I planned to record them but they last an hour and a half, too long for my cassette recorder. I have half Tuesday and hope to have some of today's. I should have recorded them on Video tape from my Sky digibox but I cannot think of how to download them to tape afterwards. I wish they had stuck to an hour.

Apols. to Pete - I hadn't checked his list (mainly because I don't have digi. TV) - must look at his radio lists in future! Perhaps DB's presentation of these programmes might bring some more radio 3 listeners to the ballet- I hope so.

I've been carefully taking my Walkman to work all this week, but have missed most of it so far. On Monday, I came in during the Kingdom of the Shades, yesterday I was otherwise occupied, and today I forgot until I read this at just gone 1 o'clock! How's it been? I notice it's actually a selection of music used for dancing (including Mahler's Kindertotenlieder, for example) than proper ballet scores as such. Good to see it happening - I just wish it wasn't at such an inconvenient time.

I have been listening to them while I work. A good selection of music and interesting introductions. I think David Bintley has done well.
