"The Bayadere March 13th 02"

I have seen many Bayadere;s but never one as dull as yesturday evening, so flat.
Why get Stiefel from A.B.T, to dance the role of Solor, the most out of character Solor I have ever set eyes on,and his variations did not set the stage on fire or the audience, One of our boys could have done made much more of the role.
As for Rojo am I missing something here!!! as she dances from the waist down, back stiff and arms which she never uses, yet at the moment she is getting all the plum roles all the media hype plus fist nights.
Yesturday her face told a story not of Nikiya but of a bored petulant dancer, who for reasons unknow changed her last variation in the wedding scene.
Thank goodness for the marvellous corps , first soloists and soloists especially ,Low,Ortuete,Valtat, and Coppen ALSO Oughtred and Morera
I am very pleases to see that Cojocaru is first cast with Giselle
sad that Benjamin has the matinee, were as Rojo the evening, sad Benjamin is one of the great Royal principals.
Lets hope in the near, very near future Ross Stretton see's the light.

   Oh dear what harsh words!

I'm afraid I'm with what is probably best referred to as the Crisp school on Tamara Rojo - a lovely, lovely expressive dancer. But that doesn't mean that all performances are the absolute tops or that *everybody* sees that. Stiefel is greatly followed as well, and I guess he's here because of that and the fact that RB are not knee deep in men at the top at the moment. Stiefel has impeccable technique but I find him a bit too cool as a dancer - why I like Tamara of course, all that drama and passion (usually - wasn't there the night you were).

I'm with Bruce here. I'm a huge admirer of both Rojo and Stiefel's beautiful dancing and they have earned their leading roles with the RB. Still I've yet to catch either on a 'bad' night so I've never been disappointed.

Out of curiosity is Coppen doing the Bronze Idol now? And I heard Brian Maloney was performing the role in the Benjamin-Kobborg performances - how are they doing?

I have mixed views around Le Bayadere and keep remembering casts with Guillem, Bussell and more to the point here Teddy Kumakawa. Breathtaking as the Bronze Idol and a hard act for anybody to follow. Maloney was fine I thought - it worked. I think I prefer Putrov at the moment though - he's wound up for bigger things and it tends to show. Not sure on Coppen (I think I'll leave it as an enigmatic statement too!)

I agree about Rojo. I have never really understood what all the fuss is about. Always find her to be rather unremarkable and certainly not a patch on Cojocaru. Funny enough, I thought Nikiya was her best role to date. I've been somewhat unimpressed with her Ondine, Juliet and Kitri.

Me too - and I think Galeazzi is replacing Nunez as Gamzatti. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing it and deciding one way or the other.

I used to be a big fan of Rojo - but her technique is not all that good compared to Cojacaru etc. She is a very expressive dancer though!

   >I have seen many Bayadere;s >of my favorite ballets,] but

I think I've found all the Bayadères I've seen this season a little flat - came out from each one wondering why I used to like the ballet/the production so much. Admittedly, it wasn't helped by the absence of Nunez as Gamzatti, a role I'd been very much looking forward to seeing her in, given the reviews.

>Why get Stiefel from A.B.T, to

Yes, but at least he paid attention to the music, which is more than one Solor I could name did! I thought he danced very well, although perhaps not as flashily as some. An aside: I really *hate* Solor's 1st/2nd act costume. I don't know what it is about it, but it makes all the men look really dumpy (and believe me, "dumpy" is not a word I thought could ever conceivably be used in connection with Johan Kobborg, who's one of the slenderest dancers I've seen). It's quite a shock to see the apparent change in physique for the last act.

Nope. It's definitely Cojocaru who's getting all that.

plus fist nights.

From the variations that I noticed, and your comments above (which I can't say I did notice) I suspected she might have had a back problem or something.

A word for Laura Morera's Shade solo, which I thought she danced extremely well, *and* without any apparent pointe-shoe noise.

>sad that Benjamin has the matinee,
>were as Rojo the

you can hardly complain about that, as they both have one matinee and one evening each.

LOL! Oh you're not the only one Alison. The first Solor I saw was Corella and he looked HUGE in costume even though he's very slight in person and made Alina look even tinier than usual. I think the costumes for all the men are very bad, the most unflattering I've ever seen.

I kept hearing a couple weeks ago that Rojo isn't 100%. More rumours - she's pulled out of Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude. Stiefel's also dancing with a knee injury, though I wouldn't have known from his dancing.

Both Alina and Tamara have had lots of publicity and media hype but Tamara has had the first nights on all the 3 act ballets so far this season - Don Q, Onegin and Bayadere.

It was the hype I was referring to rather than anything else, and that has definitely been mostly about Alina the last few months, not surprisingly. I notice, though, that Rojo has mainly had first nights on ballets new to the rep., when presumably Stretton thought she was a good bet (I always assumed that he wasn't sure about Darcey's return from maternity leave at the time he cast Rojo for Bayadère, as it must have been virtually before Darcey was back in class, I imagine). Bussell had Nutcracker and Romeo (that's a surprise - I assumed until I looked that Guillem had it), and Cojocaru has Giselle (and Don Q in the summer? Can't remember). I think I shall continue to consider Cojocaru/Rojo in the same way I did Bussell/Durante - there are some roles I think that one will do better than the other.

If he was sure enough to cast Bussell in Nutcracker then the arguement for Bayadere doesn't really stand up. Nutcracker was in booking period 2 while Bayadere was in booking period 3.

Yes, but the Sugar Plum requires what, 15 minutes of dancing in total? Could have been seen as a way of easing her back in.

I wouldn't say the role of Sugar Plum was a way of easing any dancer back in and from what Darcey has said she didn't think so either!

No, I appreciate that. I simply meant it wouldn't require her to be dancing throughout a 3-act ballet.
