"Deborah Bull"

Can anyone settle an argument for me? I am having difficulty finding good video evidence for my claim that Ms Bull can't be taller than about 5'3". My husband reckons that she's taller than that and doesn't believe me when I say that in the UK (pace Darcey) ballerinas are wee tiny things in height as well as width.

I saw her last week and she looked more like 5'4" but I wasn't exactly measuring!

From memory, I'd agree that shes about 5'4". IS there any useful info/helpful refs on her website?

Pretty sure that Darcey is similar in height to Guillem and Yanowsky - I dont think Galeazzi is small either.

Who are the smallest dancers - Cojacuru, Benjamin, Durante??

I thought she was nearer Darcey's height, whatever that is (5'7"?).

LAST EDITED ON 01-03-02 AT 01:45 PM (GMT)

In the 'Dance Ballerina Dance' video that she made a couple of years ago with Adam Cooper, standing normally she came up to Adam's nose, on point she was about his height which is - what 6'/6'1. Maybe you can do some sums from that

Bull at 5 foot 2 - now that would be a shock. Yoshida is about that high so I cannot believe that Bull is not much taller. She seemed of average hight when I saw her briefly at a book signing event as Sadlers. (admittedly - she was sitting dowm)

Well I've just visited the Arts Council site and while they have a page about the actual Council and those involved like Ms Bull, they omit to list the heights of any of them... outragous!

An article about her in D&D in 1984 says she is 5'4 1/2". Of course she may have grown, or shrunk, since then.

Why don't you ask her via her own website? I'm sure she wouldn't be shy

That was going to be my next step... I was coming to the conclusion that 5'4" was nearer the mark after studying my vid. of Symphony in C (she always struck me as fairly "normal height" on stage but when I saw her signing her book at Sadler's Wells she looked much MUCH smaller than I expected).

Re. the rest, I didn't realise how tiny Leanne B was till I saw her wedding pics in "Hello" and then a link from this site to an interview gave her height and weight which were both quite scarily low. Yanowsky always looks bigger than Bussell to me (both in height and across the shoulders) but maybe that's because I tend to see her in front of the corps rather than on stage on her own. Sylvie OTOH never seems as tall as I know she must be and of course is knitting needle thin.

Now this has all got me thinking. I wonder if the average height of the company dancers has increased over the last 20/30/40/50 years? The height of the rest of the population has, after all!

Anyway, thanks to you all for your assistance and I will go and eat humble pie now.

Having seen Zenaida Yanowsky and Darcey Bussell together in La Bayadere last weekend, Zenaida appeared to be considerably taller

This must make her quite difficult to partner? Who does she normally dance with?

I'd forgotten that I saw her as 'Sugar Plum Fairy' in 'Nutcracker' last December, partnered with Inaki Urlezaga. Must have been somewhat overshadowed in my memory by Darcey's performance a couple of weeks later!
