"RB Romeo and Juliet"

Time to send in my booking request for the next booking period at the ROH. Does anyone have any comments on the relative merits of the various casting pairings in these roles?

Thanks

Mike

Guillem and Le Riche are a superb pair, wonderful actors both, and you should catch them while you still can.

LAST EDITED ON 08-02-02 AT 03:26 AM (GMT)

I think all the casts are worth seeing. Personally I'd pick Guillem-Cope over Le Riche but I agree about catching them all while you still can. Rojo and Cojocaru have years and years of R&Js left in them.

i would have to disagree about guillem. it is the one part i find her totally unconvincing in. i was not at all moved the last time i saw her.

in my opinion, its not a role that suits bussell and unfortunately i have never seen rojo as juliet.

cojocaru and kobborg get my vote - both were absolutely superb last time i saw them.

I thought Rojo and Kobborg were both excellent in their debuts, but since they aren't cast together, and Kobborg only has the one performance, I guess that doesn't help much. As a reminder, Guillem's performance will be relayed to the big screen in the Piazza on 23rd May, I think.

I'm excited to see Cojocaru in R&J - for me, she is ideal because her youth and personality are so appropriate. I also think life is pretty good when one 'has' to choose between Bussell, Rojo, Guillem and Cojocaru. The male side of things is not quite as 'all-time' but Kobborg should be good.

I have to say it's a bit unfortunate that the ROH website has chosen to advertise R&J with a rather nice piccy of Sarah Wildor

I'd put my vote in for Bussell here -I find her a v.convincing juliet which is odd as I dont usually think shes the greatest actress at the RB.

I thought Rojo and Kobborg were so lacking in chemistry in Don Q. I'm a huge fan of both - they absolutely shone in their solos - but I never want to see them dance together again, especially in R&J. I think they got the casting exactly right for this one.

Yes, but Don Q and R&J are extremely different kettles of fish. I've seen partnerships be fantastic in one ballet and totally missable in another, so I don't think you could write them off on the basis of one ballet. I still suspect they could be really good together in Romeo, and possibly a number of the dramatic works. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as though we shall be finding out in the near future, as I assume R&J isn't on the menu for next year.
