"Bayadere Masterclass, 5 Feb"
Bayadere MasterClass, Linbury, 5 Feb 2002

Just a brief word about this. You never know when you book who you will be seeing on these occasions: we got Jamie Tapper, Ivan Putrov and Alina Cojocaru, which was quite a treat. They were each rehearsed (in a fascinating mixture of English and Russian) in excerpts from Bayadere by Olga Evreinoff, assistant to Makarova for the staging. All the participants looked fairly tired it had clearly been a long day but still worked hard.

Putrov was probably the most interesting, learning the part of the Bronze Idol. Ms Evreinoff was very clear about what she wanted. No cheating! she yelled at one point, and he grinned and acknowledged what hed done. It was clearly quite a challenge but you could see him progressing each time. I think his debut could be interesting. Unfortunately, they dont give out casting for the Bronze Idol, so Im not sure when hes on.

I very much enjoyed the masterclass as well. I'm really excited to see Jamie Tapper's Gamzatti now (incidentally, she's understudying the role of Nikiya too).

And Olga Evreinoff is another fun personality as all balletmasters and mistresses seem to be. I liked her story about the 'horrid step' that Nikiya has in the shades scene. She said Petipa disliked the ballerina he was choreographing on so much he added a series of turns in arabesque that he thought impossible to do. But she was determined to do them anyway and so here they are!
