"Sylvie Guillem in 'Winter Dreams'"

In the thread 'Please tell me the performance in Versaille' it is stated that Sylvie will be dancing 'Winter Dreams' (presumably in the role of Masha, danced originally by Darcey Bussell) with either Jonathan Cope or Massimo Murru (presumably in the role danced originally by Irek).

I am fascinated to learn this because I am a great fan of both Sylvie and 'Winter Dreams', and the two together should be stunning - I wish I could get to Versailles to see this event (as it happens, I'm actually going to Paris on 18 March, the day after the last performance!). Incidentally, I can't understand why 'Winter Dreams' has not been taken up by other ballet companies. It must be comparatively inexpensive to produce, as it doesn't call for a full orchestra, just a solo pianist and a small group of string players (if I recollect correctly) and does not have elaborate sets.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Guillem's suitability for the role, and/or why the ballet is not more widely performed?

I've had the same thoughts as Ann. This is a wonderful one act ballet. Only the farewell pdd is sometimes danced at galas, in fact, Sylvie danced it ( I think with Le Riche ) at the Wolrd Ballet Festival in 2000 if my memory is correct. Has she never danced in this ballet in Covent Garden ? I also think Sarah Wildor and Adam Cooper will be dancing the pdd in Japan next month, as a part of the MacMillan Celebration gala with The Star Dancers Ballet in Tokyo.

It does sound like an exciting prospect. The only thing is does anyone know more about Massimo Murru? I saw him twice when he was over here last summer -once in giselle (he was v.good) and once in a month in the country (where admittedly I think he was a last minute stop gap) where I thought he looked a bit wobbly in places (ie technically insecure and not terribly happy with the choreography).

Has anyone anymore background or information on him/roles hes danced etc? He must be reasonably talented as Sylvie doesnt tend to pick just anyone as a partner

jhanner, you can read some interesting background info at his website : http://www.massimomurru.com/biography.html.
He graduated in 1990 at the La Scala balletschool and was promoted to principal in 1994.
Murru will be partnering Guillem again in "Carmen" : 10-13-16-19th April, and take part in the RB Australia tour.

Tomoko, thanks for this information. I should have guessed that it was only a pas-de-deux rather than the whole ballet - in fact I wasn't even aware that the pdd had been taken out of context and was being danced at galas etc.

Do you know what the programme is for the MacMillan celebration in Japan? My guess is that there will be the usual pdds from Manon, R & J etc, but have you any information about what else is to be danced?

Many thanks!

Ann, MacMillan did 'Seven Deadly Sins' three times (at least): for Western Theatre Ballet in 1961; a revised version of that for the RB in 1972 (with Jennifer Penney/Georgia Brown as the dancing/singing Annas, and a memorable Lynn Seymour as the Queen of the Cabaret in the Pride section); and a new version for television in 1984, with Alessandra Ferri.

I imagine it will be the RB version that they'll be using in Japan. The music is by Kurt Weill, libretto by Brecht.
