yes i've been to the Nutcracker...RB of course! Oh it's not quite the same without Sir Anthony as Drosselmeyer, but at least i have that on DVD ..and i can see it at Christmas on BBC2! But it was lovely..Darcey was fantastic , great to have her back. Might go to one of the other performances in January...

   Any more impressions anybody?

Have they restored some of the effects - ie flying the sleigh at the end of act one - that were dropped when this production came back in 1999 in the midst of all the reopening gremlins?

I went last night. Even with appallingly limited view seats, it was still beautiful. Alina was just perfect and, having not seen Jonathan Cope dance for a good while, I was struck again by just how brilliant and fluent and graceful he is!! I was really excited about seeing Darcey, but she seemed quite uncomfortable in many places.

I'm sure it was shorter than last year. I seem to remember parades of fairytale characters coming through at the end - although maybe I'm COMPLETELY wrong. Does anyone else remember this???

Sketchy memory of this when the production was new in 1984 but I think this music now does duty for the apotheosis behind the gauze of the workshop - so badly lit and under projected when I saw it in 2000 that you could not grasp the significance. A more bitter-sweet, less spectacular ending.

You're not confusing it with Sleeping Beauty, are you?

I could well be confusing it with Eastenders after this many Christmas parties!

I saw the nutcracker for the first time last night and found it quite fun.

Didn't like the costumes for the first act, too dull
but the set and lighting were great.

Cojocaru was amazing as Clara, she's so light and neat and fun to watch. I didn't realise Clara had so much dancing in the first act.

I thought most the dancing was great with one exception, the Rose fairy, its awful to say but she was like a clumsy giant and seemed out of place and just not like a fairy at all.

I don't think its a ballet I could watch again and again.

It's not fair not to tell us who this was, but I can see you mightn't want to!

Did anyone see Natasha Oughtred as Clara? If so, what were your impressions?

My seat was closer than I would have wished but I thought that the Oughtred portrayal was gracious and excellent although her jump left something to be desired. Her partner,Brian Maloney, was strong and impressive. The Opera House did not post the cast change for Clara and Nutcracker and posted no information on Maloney whereas when Stepanek stepped in as Lensky at short notice they updated the website and managed to print a short CV for Stepanek on the cast sheet.
The new ROH web site is good news the lack of currency a matter for shame. Maloney showed attack an stamina and looks a good Bronze Idol in the making and Stepanek was very impressive as well. We have some good reserves which should mean less borrowing for principals in future.

I went last week (28th) expecting to see Alina Cojocaru dancing Clara (as per the ROH website casting info), only to find Iohna Loots in the role, and no announcement of this cast change either on the website or in the programme. Whilst this was something of a disappointment, as I'd seen her earlier in the run (15 Dec), she seems to have increased in confidence in the role.

She's listed as an Artist in the programme - does anyone have any idea what other roles she has danced with the RB? I believe that she joined a couple of years ago, from Cape Town City Ballet

Mike
