"George Pipe Dances at QEH: Query"

Has anyone else seen George Piper Dances at the QEH this week? I'd like to compare notes. I am pretty certain that Trevitt and Nunn have mucked about with Maliphant's 'Critical Mass' since its run at the Roundhouse last month. It's as if, realising how popular the piece was, they felt it necessary to expand it to fill the entire second half. Now the piece has become semi-jokey, made to seem like a boxing match by lighting effects and to resemble a dance-hall number by a lengthy change in music. There are now comic eye-contacts between the men and numerous other changes which disastrously lessen the tension so essential to such a solid and thoughtful work.

Less is more, boyz, didn't you know?

I was at both the Roundhouse and at the QEH this week. I didn't see any changes at all. The music and lighting effects were the same - the 'boxing -ring' light effect was there from the very beginning, as was the different items of music that make up the score. I didn't see it as at all jokey.

What may be different is that at the Roundhouse it was one of two items which came after the interval: at the QEH there were three items before the interval and just Critical Mass after it (presumably Trevitt needed a breather, since he was in every piece: he wasn't in the different items on the Roundhouse programme).

I thought it was just as stunning at second viewing, and their partnership gets better all the time.

The various improvisations in Critical Mass depend crucially on eye contact. In the Roundhouse there were moments when Nunn and Trevitt could cue each other into the next sequence unobserved. Is it different at the QEH?
