"Bayadere - POB - Zakharova"

I saw a most wonderful performance of La Bayadere last night. I had never seen Zakharova dance before and she was a revelation to me! I had assumed that she was a beautiful dancer but also a cold slightly show off technician. She proved me wrong : she is indeed a beautiful dancer (perfect proportions, long legs, super arched feet)but also a very lyrical one with beautiful arms and torso movements and a great stage presence. Her Nikyia charmed the whole (critical) audience and was rightly acclaimed. Jean-Guillaume Bart was a superb Solor and the corps as good as ever in the third act. I think I remember that Zakharova danced with the Kirov in London last summer. What did you think of her then?

Clement Crisp was enthusing about her in today's Financial Times - Brendan hasn't picked up on this yet, so I assume it's not available on-line yet. (Sorry, Brendan, just realised that that was tagged on to the end of the Kochno tribute, which I think you did pick up on).

In self defence, we did pick up on it yesterday. Sometimes Clement Crisp's reviews appear on the FT website several days (in the case of his Twyla Tharp piece, a week)before they turn up on the actual newspaper. Here again is the link.

Eleonore, thanks for sharing your impressions on Svetlana Zakharova with us.
Lucky you ! Seeing her in such a sumptuous ballet as La Bayadère !
I saw her during Kirov's last summer visit to London in 'Sleeping beauty'.
She was -in my humble opinion- a radiant Princess Aurora.
She tackled the demanding dancing with vigour and I think you don't need a lot of imagination
to see this beautiful dancer in this role.
Although not totally convinced about this long ballet, I still cherish an overwhelming impression from my *very* first Kirov-performance...and she takes most of the credits for this.
She simply stole the heart of the public.

Can you tell something more about the total cast you saw ?

Bart (Solor) is a perfect product of the "French school" with a very pure and classical dancing, very "clean" and precise. I found him particularly impressive in the difficult variation in the third act. Delphine Moussin was Gamzatti. She was very good in the first act as the haughty princess sure of her power and nobility. The "fight" between her and Zakharova was quite convincing. She survived through the variation and impossible coda of act 2, but struggled a bit to do so. Jeremie Belingard was a fanttstic bronze idol. I am really sorry that he is not dancing Solor opposite Abbagnato's Nikiya next week as I have some doubts over Paquette in the role (but I do hope Paquette will prove me wrong). The three shade were beautifully danced by Isabelle Ciaravola, Melanie Hurel and Fanny Fiat, with a special mention to Fiat. Although I preferred Abbagnato's Gamzatti and Letestu was also a beautiful Nikiya, definitely the best performance of the bayaderes I have seen this season.

   Eleonore,
Like you ,I have been impressed by Zakharova's performance too. (I was in the audience on the 05/12/01). I saw Zakharova on July 2001 in Versailles with the Kirov. She danced Tchaïkovsky-pas-de-deux, ans I found she had no style, with "free effects" with her legs. She didn't convince me at all.
In La Bayadère in POB, she was very different and I loved very much her performance!

I've just finished reading a nice article by Emma Manning on Jean-Guillaume Bart in this month's Dance Europe.
Oh ! It will take years before I have seen *all* Parisian dancers I'm afraid !
Which Bayadère-cast would you recommend during last week of December ?

Allow me to energetically recommend any cast - in any ballet, actually - where Elisabeth Maurin is dancing. Mlle. Maurin is the last of the so-called "Nureyev" generation of étoiles, among the ladies. The audience tends to go into shock when the tiny redhead comes out, surrounded by strapping six-foot beauties. They come out of shock rather quickly however, as soon as she puts pen to paper, to stretch a metaphor. Her dancing is 100% quality, total commitment, and extremely technical, though quite the opposite of what Mlle Guillem would call technique, in every way shape and form. Her eyes alone, are a study. Being French, she is very reserved - you will not get the Tamara Rojo effect - but there are waters that run deep indeed without being in the slighest stagnant !

This is a dancer somewhat off the cocktail party circuit, and rarely, if ever, cited in the press or trade press. But a life off the cocktail party circuit does not mean brain dead, in this particular case.

If you go on the 30th of December, you will see Emmanuel Thibault, incidentally, as the Golden Idol, an unbearably silly role for a remarkable artist.

I have just heard that Mlle Maurin will also do the performance on the 26th of December, although she will be saddled with the unfortunate M. Paquette as Solor, as well as the performance on January 5th, with M. Pech.

Thank you for this 'energetical' recommendation, Katharine !
Sounds very promising !!!

To all : have a look at the way POB is presenting 'La Bayadère' on their website ! ...and put on your speaker-system...
