"TV viewer want ballet not opera"

Artsworld have ask people to vote on what they want to see this Sunday on Artsworld (broadcasted free on to celebrate its first year). 35% voted for Swan Lake.

This is significant because it shows that people want more ballet then opera on TV. So why is there more opera?

I cannot help feeling that there is an attitude in the BBC that rates ballet very poorly. Perhaps they are all opera fans. They will always go for opera the ballet.

I like opera very much (in fact I prefer it to ballet) BUT there is an adequate medium for it outside of the theater called CD. I have not interest in watching poor sounding opera on TV when I can hear it perfectly on CD. This might explain the very poor ratings fof opera.

Ballet, on the hand, has no other medium but TV. And it comes of very well on TV esp pas de duex scenes. The poor sound from TV is not so important as it is a visual medium.

I think I might write to the BBC!

I do agree with you about ballet and opera. If you are over 45 don't bother to write to the BBC, they throw it in the bin!

Just a thought, but how do they know how old you are if you don't tell them?

Yes, we do need more ballet on TV (and contemporary dance please), but not just on specialist channels. It's the same problem with football: unless you subscribe to this, that and the other, you have to go in search of a pub that shows the footy on the big screen if your favourite team is playing. I don't feel like wandering into a bar and asking the staff if they would put the ballet on!

Like some other contributors to this site, I love both opera and ballet (and contemporary dance, and football). I have really valued being able to watch programmes such as the documentary about ABT, or ballet repertoire that I can't see without going to London (I just can't afford the time to do that regularly - let alone stand the cost). I'm not sure how well opera transfers to the small screen - opera is drama writ large in a manner which needs the theatre; this is apart from the fact that I find so many productions disappointing, either because the production values are not as good as they should be, or else because the singers are physically unbelievable as the characters they are meant to portray. The best opera productions are usually in my mind when I listen to the music, but there are occasions when it all works as it should.

Well, I guess that's the reason why I don't go to Opera anymore...after a lots of (expensive) disappointments !

BBC sorry, you are correct, but if you telephone, they ask, and they also asked which part of the country I came from, I was so annoyed I forgot what I was complaining about!
