Note that I am voting in this minipoll but didn't in the female one because my choice wasn't on the list!

Colas, no question - one of the very few roles with lots of non-trite dancing, no standing around looking constipated (cf Siegfried) AND a happy ending!

I think it amazing that Siegfried, Florimund and Romeo are not on offer (among the most popular counterparts of the women), even if the Faun isn't!

I can certainly understand why Florimund hasn't been nominated - IMO it's only the most boring and prissiest of roles in the entire male repetoire.

As for Siegfried, I've seen quite a few discussions where he's been described as a complete himbo, who "couldn't tell a black feather from a white one".

And for me, I'll stick to my guns and vote for 'other'. I still count the roles of Oberon and Puck as my favourites.

I guess Des Grieux would run a close third - I love the choreography, but I think the bloke's a bit too spineless for my taste.

Hope I didn't offend too many people here.

   Jim -
To answer your points: Florimund was never suggested (check the thread), Romeo is in the list (check again), and as for Siegfried, one person did suggest him but I decided to omit him because Bruce says I'm in charge of the poll and I can do what I like, so there...

Gulp! 'tis true though - Ann is the boss on this!

One thing we need to change though.. it's James rather than Jamie in La Sylphide. Actually I think Jamie is far more in keeping...

Yes, as you may guess, I noticed it a couple of seconds after I clicked off the posting! Oooops! But it is intriguing how little parallel there is between the male and female choice of respective counterparts!

Maybe this poll had to be 'men only' !?
Now we will get an ambiguous result
It was fun to make fantasies about it but I will not vote.
I wonder how many men have voted on the 'female'-poll ?
Bruce, I don't think your software is that sophisticated to detect this ?

What happened to the list? I really did fancy dancing in the Can Can. Now I will have to vote other, which could mean anything including Mathew Clark's dirty doings.

I'd rather like to dance that version of Bolero that Irek did at the Wells, as long as it's with Asylmuratova. Or maybe the main man in Caroline Mathilde.

Working on the minimum effort / maximum reward theory (which is why I'm a not a dancer, obviously) the top male role must be the gaoler in Manon. Ten minutes on stage, including an encounter with the leading lady and a reasonable curtain call. Now that's what I call job satisfaction.

Oops, I'm being shallow aren't I?

Along similar lines, my mum always reckoned that the Commendatore in Don Giovanni had to be the ideal role in opera - key plot enabler, dramatic death, dramatic re-entrance as ghost, star billing and lots of applause!

I thought Irek's Four Horsemen piece at his gala looked like great fun to dance - funny with lots of tricks and fab music.

Actually I think I'd like to be Monsieur G.M. (Manon). He's totally misunderstood of course and if she's stayed with him there would have been none of that short back and sides & swamp malarkey....

May I suggest that there should be a new mini poll of non-ballet dance roles? It was suggested that we could choose other dance roles but non-were chosen. I wanted to suggest the male role in the Can Can, but others would I am sure fancy Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly dances. I would have thought that most men would want to have danced like the Nicholas brothers. I also think of Joel Gray in Cabaret. I get the impression from the poll that even good modern dance roles were ruled out.
PS I have only suggested male roles I am sure the girls can think up hundreds.

What I'd quite like to know is how many of the votes for Bourne's Swan are actually cast by men.

Now that is a very good question! Do you think that perhaps more women than men would want to dance that role?

To answer Robert's point - I did try to indicate that modern dance roles were included in the poll, but pointed out that they had to be 'named' ones, because for technical reasons the choices set out in the actual poll box have to be brief - only a limited number of words (6/8?) are possible, so for example 'That bloke in Kiss me Kate who slides across the stage on his knees' wouldn't work. (I'm exaggerating, but I hope this clarifies matters). If we can get our heads around the technical limitations we may be able to do a similar poll entirely devoted to modern roles (for girlz and boyz).

Well, that's what I'd figured! But know we know at least one of the voters is male

22. "Poll on which male role to dance: THE RESULT"
In response to message #17

   Matthew Bourne's 'Swan' 24.7%
Other: 13.0%
Spartacus 11.0%
Rudolph (Mayerling) 9.6%
Albrecht (Giselle) 9.6%
Basilio 8.2%
Apollo 6.8%
James (LaSylphide) 5.5%
MacMillan's 'Romeo' 5.5%
Des Grieux (Manon) 4.1%
Colas (Fille mal Gardee) 1.4%

And the winner is - AMP's 'Swan'! By a mile! (I put it down to those leather trousers myself....)

I am surprised that the MacMillan roles didn't score higher given that he wrote such powerful parts for men. The high score of 'other' is fascinating, but we just couldn't put in all the suggestions because the list would have been more than we can technically manage (I've only got so many knobs on my machine, you know).
