"English National Ballet update?"

I know it must be crazy updating all the company information, especially with all the changes in directorships!!
But curious to know what's happening now that Matz Skoog has taken over.

New Artistic Director, Matz Skoog
Matz Skoog, the Swedish-born former English National Ballet Principal
Dancer, took up his position as English National Ballet's new Artistic
Director on September 10, 2001. A Principal Dancer with English National
Ballet for more than ten years, Skoog has been Artistic Director of The
Royal New Zealand Ballet since 1996 and succeeds Derek Deane OBE, who led
the Company for the last seven years.

Mr Skoog said:
'I am thrilled to be 'back home' at English National Ballet and I would like
to thank Chairman, Angela Rippon, Managing Director Christopher Nourse and
all my new colleagues for the warm welcome I have received. My priority is
to get to know the Company's dancers and then start to make real plans for
an exciting future. I inherit from Derek Deane and his artistic team a
Company in very fine shape. I intend to build on this and develop an
exciting, challenging and entertaining new repertoire, as well as continuing
to perform the magnificent classical ballets that are at the core of our
repertoire.'

New Dancers join the Company
English National Ballet numbers 64 dancers this Season with 19 nationalities
represented throughout its ranks. In addition to Jan-Erik Wikstršm who joins
as Principal, Jesťs Pastor joins as Senior Soloist from Scottish Ballet and
Cameron McMillan joins as Junior Soloist. With the arrival into the corps de
ballet of Jessica Hanzlicek, Miranda Lee and Sally Robinson, 20% of the
Company are now graduates of English National Ballet School, which was
established in 1988.

The ever-popular Thomas Edur and Agnes Oaks return to the Company as Guest
Principal Dancers for the Autumn Tour and Christmas Season.

Cinderella
This magical production of Cinderella, with beautiful choreography to
Prokofiev's brilliant score and stunning designs by David Walker, is a
modern classic. It is the winner of the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for
Best New Dance Production and the 1996 Evening Standard Award for
Outstanding Production.

Cinderella has already enjoyed sell-out performances at The Mayflower,
Southampton and can also be seen The Apollo Theatre, Oxford, The Opera
House, Manchester, The Hippodrome, Bristol and the London Coliseum.

Apollo, Double Concerto and Who Cares?
The Company performs a mixed programme featuring two Balanchine classics,
Apollo and Who Cares? together with the World Premiere performances of
Double Concerto from choreographer and former Company dancer, Christopher
Hampson.

George Balanchine's neoclassical masterpiece, Apollo is set to a thrilling
Stravinsky score and explores the mythological youth of the god Apollo and
the muses of poetry, mime and dance.

Christopher Hampson's Double Concerto with music by Francis Poulenc,
promises to be a stylish, musical and thoroughly classical ballet. This new
ballet has been made possible by generous sponsorship from London law firm,
Herbert Smith.

The programme is completed with George Balanchine's sparkling Who Cares? a
dazzling tribute to Fred Astaire and all the razzmatazz of the glamorous
1930s set to a song-cycle by George Gershwin in a special orchestration by
Hershy Kay.

The mixed programme can be seen at The Opera House, Manchester, The
Hippodrome, Bristol and the London Coliseum.

The Nutcracker
This year marks the final performances of Derek Deane's The Nutcracker and
can be seen at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool and the London Coliseum. The
Company is grateful to Barbie in the Nutcracker for sponsoring these
performances. First seen in 1997, this Harrod's sponsored production has all
the elements of a traditional classical ballet for all the family at
Christmas with a refreshingly modern twist.
