She went to Australia (IIRC with Errol Pickford, her other half?) about 5 (or maybe a little more) years ago.

LAST EDITED ON 19-10-01 AT 03:09 PM (GMT)

She used to dance with Errol in Western Australian Ballet - but no idea if this is still up to date! - info and some photos on http://www.waballet.com.au/gallery.asp
(I just flicked through the site, but seem unable to find details on the DANCERS - strange enough, I would say...)

I asked the same question a while ago in some email with a lady who posts on this site (Alice?). She did tell me that, after splitting with Errol Pickford, Benazir had left WA and was dancing in Sydney - I'm afraid I've forgotten the details but maybe if she reads this she could shed more light.

while no longer a couple, benazir and errol are still dancing happily with west australian ballet.

after spending a year with the AB under ross stretton's direction, benazir returned to WA ballet, where she is much appreciated by choreographers and audiences alike.

as the west coast reviewer for dance australia magazine, i have reviewed all of their performances, and would be happy to email copies of some, to anyone who is seriously interested. email me if you want to.

she graced the (previous issue) cover of dance australia magazine - in a shocker of a costume, as lady capulet - not that you'd know that, by looking at the dress! (that's the august/september issue, which should be obtainable in london - somewhere.... - now that dancebooks isn't physically there, any more, i don't know where to advise you to purchase one.)

the WA ballet website is http://www.waballet.com.au

you could get in touch with her personally, by emailing the company (it's only a small group of people, with an excellent standard, currently under the direction of ted brandsen -who is about to return to holland as wayne eagling's associate director).

WA ballet director's job is up for grabs: spread the word!

WA is certainly an excellant band of dancers and includes Jayne Cooper who danced for NDT2-always interesting to watch.

...sorry for going astray from the original topic - but I've noticed Emiliana Lione (sp?) on some photos - there used to be a lovely, pretty dancer with this name here in Munich - wondering if and why she went to Australia (if it is her)??

yes, it's her - and yes, she's fabulous!

i could be wrong on this, but i had the impression that she was offered a position with WAB a least partly on the strength of the background she shared with one of WAB's best dancers: jacinta ross.

ross is west australian, but finished her training with besobrasova in monte carlo, then went to bern and basler ballets.

lione is from rome, trained at academia nazionale di danza classica, then besobrasova's & heinz bosl stiftung in munich - then danced in munich.

other names europeans might recognise are:-

askhat galiamov, from uzbekistan, bolshoi graduate. a wonderfully clean dancer, he will become ballet master in january, superceding judy maelor-thomas (benesh notator & associate director) who becomes acting artistic director while the position of AD is advertised internationally.

of course, some of the locals are pretty good too!

Grace, thanks so much for this quick reply! Good to hear "Emi" seems to have found a place where she's happy!
It's so interesting - here in Munich there are quite a few dancers from Australia and New Zealand - and some quite Europe to find happiness elsewhere!
I noticed Emiliana had left the company here, but information about where dancers go is very scarce... So thanks again, and kind regards!

   my pleasure, sonja.

lione gave a particularly amazing performance last february, in the premiere of a work by aboriginal choreographer, stephen page - it was a cross between aboriginal dance and ballet, believe it or not! you 'could' call it 'contemporary dance' - but i would call it contemporary ballet, and it was strikingly different to anything i've ever seen before. lione was exceptional in this work.

well, a review, yes. if you two want to email me, it's permissible for me to share it, now, as that issue of the magazine is no longer current/available.

i don't think it would give you the info you may want, though - descriptive stuff about the choreographers work - but you're welcome, if you're interested....

if i thought it had that sort of general value, it might seem appropriate to post it here - but i don't think it does. any movement which seems 'new' is so hard to describe in words....i try, of course, because i'm obliged to - but i'm never sure i succeed. so that particular review is probably more descriptive of the various (dancer's) performances, than of the works.

just remembered i have this photo of them (errol and benazir)online, which the original questioner might like to see (they are the patrons of my ballet school, and the pic appears - much smaller - at my school's website. however, the school website is way out of date, and i thought it had been taken down by the ISP/host, SO - if you can't see anything, please don't be surprised...but it APPEARS to still be there. i hope so.) the pic shows them jumping above beach sand dunes in western australia.

can anyone see anything?
