Ah, but Viviane - we didn't say the poll was open only to the ladies! (sly smile). And besides, you don't know what we've got up our sleeve for the next poll...

Hmmm.... all classical, no modern. Or is that going to be a future poll?

Caz, the question referred to *ballerina* roles, and the assumption must be that ballerinas dance only classical roles (that's my understanding anyway). But your point highlights an interesting theme for a future poll.

Am I right in assuming this is fantasy ballet-land, and answers need have no connection with what posters could actually do? Must be, you wouldn't get much response if it was connected to reality!

I picked Manon - and if I get to pick my partner then let it be Irek or Adam throwing me around in those great pdd's! Ah what a fantasy, one great moment as a ballerina with a perfect partner.

Great poll idea!

Well, I've been thinking about the choice of roles and I've decided I don't really want to dance any of 'em.

What I'd really love to dance is any of the Fokine ballets, but if I had to pick one that would have to be 'Spectre de la Rose' with Farouk Ruzimatov as my partner. Mmmmmm....

This question has puzzled me the whole day through (even on the scaffolding !).
Hey! I didn't had this problem with other Mini-poll questions

At first thought I just wanted to do all the roles.
How tempting to dance a enamoured Giselle or a provocative Manon.
But then I have to give up the joyfull Lise or the passionate Juliet.
Strange, I noticed that I had no temptations to become a swan...
Hmm...a mysterious Nikiya maybe ? (I'm thrilled by the costumes) or a hopeless Tatiana...
Shame over me : I never saw Don Quixote !

Most of the times 'I bite off more then I can chew' .
So I MUST choose only one !
Now, I'm sure of my choice (well...completely depending on my mood of today) : the demanding role of Aurora because I need a 'HAPPY END' and adore a big apotheosis : I have had already enough sad stories in my life. Only 1 important inquiry : I want to choose the cast myself....

But to be honest....I'm missing one on the list : I'm dreaming I could dance 'Paquita'. Being transformed from a gypsy into a noble lady in a couple of hours...during one of the most sumptuous, joyful ballets I saw in recent years : superb !

I learned an interesting lesson out of this 'fantasy-world' : I was amazed I didn't choose for a role in one of my most-beloved ballets !

This is such a girly discussion isn't it!! Great fun. Much more fun that work!

I had no qualms about choosing to be Odette/Odile!! It's a fabulous role - you get to be all dreamy and tragic in half of it and then to be an utter temptress in the other half!!

You also get to do it all to the most beautiful music ever written, in lots of dry ice, with a white or black tutu and diamante tiara, and do those fabulous arm movements and that prancing around on pointe that i ALWAYS do on the way home from the tube after a performance.

I'd also definitely have Jonathan Cope as my Seigfried, or, if all else failed, Roberto Bolle.

I agree with you it absolutely had to be Odette/Odile but Juliet/Manon/Giselle came a very close second. I have been working on sections from Swan Lake in one of my private lessons and to perform it would be my dream come true maybe in the not too distant future I hope! I think it would have to be Jonathan Cope but I wish I had been born earlier because then it would have been Dowell or Nureyev what a choice!

I know what you mean - wanting to watch and wanting to dance are different things! Still can't come up with an answer, though. I'd want to pick and choose bits of lots of things!

No, I tell a lie, I HAVE chosen. I want to be Clara in BRB's Nutcracker, but I want it still to be me who comes out from under Drosselmeyer's cloak to be the Sugar Plum, not Miyako! I love the video of this with Sandra Madgwick, she's a lovely dancer, and she got to dance with Irek as well! (I rather like that number just after she's killed the king rat...)

So, can we have Clara in the list too, but only in that production and with Irek as the Prince?

Tough choice...probably Odile/Odette, though I have to admit my favourite sections of music are the pas de trois and all the corps music from Act II, so maybe I'd be happier in a lesser role! As for a partner to dance with, Dowell would be my number one choice, along with Cope.

Running a close second is Juliet, just for the beautiful pdds.

I wish Titania from The Dream was listed, as short as her role in the ballet is. Can we have Oberon/Puck included for the boys poll?

I would be thrilled to dance any of the roles on the list! For me, it was a tough choice between Juliet, Manon and Odette/Odile.
Manon is so steamy and voracious, especially in that bedroom pdd, which I adore. On the other hand the whole experience of the black and white tutus in Odette/Odile would be gorgeous but I can't pick a role for its costume! In the end I went for Juliet because of the passion and the delicious Prokoviev score, with Irek as my Romeo. Oh if only!

Which of these ballerina roles would you most want to dance?

Odette/Odile 23.6%
Juliet 20.3%
Aurora 15.4%
Giselle 13.8%
Manon 8.9%
Kitri (Don Q) 7.3%
Nikiya (Bayadere) 4.3%
Lise (Fille mal Gardee) 3.3%
Tatiana (Onegin) 2.4%

This has been a particularly exciting poll - Juliet was was out in front all along and then, slowly, Odette/Odile drew level and finally overtook and was first past the post by a short head... (er... that's all the horse-racing similies I can think of for the moment).

Seriously, I'm quite surprised that Odette/Odile and Aurora polled so highly, given that these are technically very demanding roles. We're obviously a tough bunch!.
