"New dance company"

Picked this bit of info up off alt.arts.ballet - a newsgroup....

>>>We are looking for dedicated, hard working dancers to form the first
black ballet company Britain has seen since the 1950's. This is at
present, unpaid work and would be ideal for vocational dance students.
Ballet Black can offer you the chance to gain performance experience,
and work with a professional company.

We require male and female dancers, from the age of 16 upwards, of
African/Afro-Caribbean or racially mixed descent, with strong
technique in pointe work and virtuosity.

The audition will be held at the Royal Academy of Dance in Battersea,
on the 27th of October at 2pm. Former English National Ballet dancer,
Denzil Bailey will lead the audition class.

I'm pleased to say that the next magazine - out on Wednesday night - has the first in a diary series about the coming together of Ballet Black. We just finished the page last night!

Worth noting that the audition notice was put up in our training and auditions forum yesterday:
http://www.danze.co.uk/dcforum/training/104.html

   Robert.

Though your comment may not be intended as a direct insult, it has prompted us to respond:

Before you associate our organisation with "rejects", why not visit our website at http://www.balletblack.org.uk and find out what we are about. If after doing this you still wish to make similar comments, based on informed opinions, we welcome them.

And we heard you the first time - no need to post it twice.

i have a question, however. no doubt you will get good dancers. however how can you expect to keep them for any length of time if they are not paid? will this (hopefully for you) only be for a short while? that was my original thought on reading your notice. good luck, nonetheless.

The main point about Ballet Black is that we are trying to do something that, until now, hasn't been done in the U.K for several years. Les Ballet Nègres, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Dance Theater of Harlem all began with little or no money, but the passion and drive of the individuals involved caused things to happen. We appreciate that a career as a dancer today is more sophisticated in terms of payment, contracts and opportunities, but we hope to find people who are as passionate about the purpose of Ballet Black as we are.

The lack of funding to pay our dancers is one of the reasons that we specified vocational dance students. This is a temporary situation. It enables us to use well trained dancers and allows the students to continue their training and perform as part of a company. In all of our advertising for the company, we have made this clear, to ensure any dancers auditioning know where they stand.

i understand, and i do not disagree. my only reason for asking is that typically, a dancer of the standard it seems you are asking would not be able to work for no compensation, at least not for long, even if it were for a good reason. and that it might make it difficult to have any continuity for a while. but i nonetheless still wish you luck.

   Casso Pancho. Ballet Black
I am sorry you think my inadvertent double posting insulting. I certainly had no intention of upsetting you or Ballet Black. It should be obvious I feel rather differently about the present Royal Ballet management. I personally would not consider people who had been forced to leave the RB as poor dancers even if they had been rejected, but then unless DaCosta walks they would be all rejected by you on grounds of colour.
Incidentally I did read your website and found it interesting. I think I saw ‘Les Ballets Negres’ and have been trying to find the programme. I am afraid it was all a long time ago, but I remember an interesting black classical company and their posters, which were very distinctive.
