"Irek Mukhamedov's best roles"

As London bids farewell to one of ballet's greatest stars (shame on you, Royal Ballet, for his manner of departure), I started thinking about the Irek performances that made the biggest impression on me.

1 Mayerling - I've only seen this on video but I must have watched it at least 30 times (I have two copies!) An amazing, charismatic and entirely convimcing performance.

2 The Judas Tree - another powerful MacMillan interpretation. This seems like a different ballet if anyone else dances The Foreman.

3 Manon - Mukhamedov and Durante on the last night of the Coliseum season during the ROH closure. A fantastic partnership at its absolute best.

4 Fearful Symmetries - Page's one landmark production for RB, showing Mukhamedov at his best

5 Giselle - if there's a better Albrecht, I haven't seen him.

6 The Invitation - another powerful performance.

Role I would have liked to have seen him perform - Rhapsody

I agree with all the ones you have included, however I'd like to add:

Winter Dreams

La Fille Mal Gardee

And let's not forget how funny he can be. Anyone else remember him in Les Biches and in Side Show, the little MacMillan pas de deux he danced in just a few performances with Yoshida at the old Opera House?

Well, while we're at it, "fantasy ballet league" here I come:

Ideal casting for Liaisons would be:

Valmont - Irek
Marquise de Merteuil - Lesley Collier
Presidente de Tourvel - Sarah Wildor
Sophie - Vanessa Palmer
Chevalier Danceny - Inaki Urlezaga

Well, I can dream!

For me, Irek could play hopscotch and still set the stage alight - but the performance that gave me most delight, because it was most unexpected, was his Colas with Miyako Yoshida. I hadn't expected either of them to get to the heart of the roles, and it was one of the most joyous performances I've seen.

Close second was the first time I saw Viviana - they were doing Giselle and that rocked me sideways. Then, of course, came Manon and R&J... and as for the BRB Nutcracker, another unexpected treat... then looking back at the athleticism of Spartacus...
Heck, the guy's just a genius!

Definitely Albrecht! His last performances this year were absolutely sizzling. Of course if one had to list one performance only it was his Albrecht with Lesley Collier's last Giselle. The only Albrecht that realises the game is up when Giselle shows him the necklace that the Countess has given her.

I totally agree - I saw all Irek's performances this year and was moved to tears by his last two Albrecht's (not least because I feared they were his last!) Here's to another great evening by a great artist Sunday night.

I agree that his Crown Prince Rudolf is superb. I was also most impressed by his Lescaut (twice with Sylvie). I see that nobody has mentioned Romeo. I did not myself find that performance so memorable.

Well, actually not the only one . I saw Patrick Armand in the role with ENB on tour earlier this year, and his sudden realisation that both their worlds were about to fall apart when he recognised the necklace was quite stunning. And in fact, in an email to various people at the time I said "I don't think I've ever seen any Albrecht, even Mukhamedov, putting in so much characterisation and reacting so much to everything that was going on". But yes, I agree that Albrecht was definitely one of Irek's best roles, especially with Durante. In fact, I decided not to book for him in Giselle this year specifically because he wasn't dancing with her and I wanted to remember the two of them together.

Irek is scheduled for Giselle this year - season 2001-2002?

Agree about Albrecht - especially that last performance with Collier. And at curtain call he was incredibly generous to her, letting her take all the applause, fighting shy of her entreaties to share the ovation - a gent.

Colas with Yoshida was a treat too but I saw that too late - he was beyond turning and spinning properly - so amazed to see the difference last Sunday in the farewell.

Basilio (?) in Don Quixote for some very cheeky aerial footwork.

Originally Spartacus in 1986, especially the diagonal sequence - still etched on the memory.
