"Royal Ballet casting - worries?"

Alison has asked me to post the following message on her behalf:

When the season 2 brochure for the Royal Ballet dropped through my door last week, a niggling worry started to crystallise. When I found the casting for the Nutcracker (NB., ROH, putting it on the back of the booking form, which we are expected to return to you, is *not* a good move) I realised that nobody below Principal rank has been cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and most of her Cavaliers are Principals as well. I know some readers of these pages were critical of some of the lower-ranked casts last year, but, mentioning no names, as I don't want to get side-tracked into another of those pro- and anti-dancer discussions, there are certainly dancers below Principal level
who are more than capable of dancing Sugar Plum, and some at Principal level who are not regarded highly by all as "tutu-role" dancers. It looks as though those at First Soloist and below will have to be content with dancing the Rose Fairy (assuming that role doesn't go to principals either) at most,
which must be highly frustrating for them.

Is this the way Royal Ballet casting is going to go in the future, with only the highest-ranked dancers getting the really meaty parts (*and* Sugar Plum!), or is Ross Stretton just playing safe with the casting until he works out who's best suited to given roles? Perhaps all will become clear once the casting for "Onegin" is announced, but I certainly hope that the
former isn't the case. Over the years, I've really appreciated the factthat at the Royal Ballet, unlike some other companies, dancers tend to be given roles that they are ready for, no matter what their ranking, rather than having roles pretty rigidly allocated according to hierarchy, so that we've had the satisfaction of being able to watch dancers as they progress
through the company, and I would be very sorry to see that change.

Period 3 booking info includes casting only for Giselle and La Bayadere. There's no casting for the Enduring Images mixed bill- only this explanation:

"All ballet aficionados are aware of the importance of the right casting for the success of a production. It is felt that the company must delay announcing casting in order to achieve appropriately high artistic standards. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you"

Given the precedent already set with Onegin, and now this, it seems that late casting is about to become a way of life at the RB.

   Brendan,

Could you share with us where you were able to obtain the period 3 casting details from, or is it something which is restricted to Friends members this early on?

Many thanks.

Is there still nothing on Onegin casting? I gave up my Friends booking to wait for casting and now it seems like I will have to book blind anyway.

You didn't need to give up your Friends' booking because of the Onegin casting situation - the literature said that they would be happy to exchange tickets once casting info had been announced (or words to that effect, it was read out over the phone to me months ago now)

   Ann,
I share your concerns over this. Not only is a very fine dancer not dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy, but given the casting for Giselle, I notice the same dancer is not dancing Giselle either.
That after quite magnificent performances last year in these roles.

LAST EDITED ON 26-09-01 AT 10:44 PM (GMT)

(It was me, not Ann - I'm having continuing posting problems).

With an amazing bit of timing, my original posting has been taken over by other events. The day I posted this, the Friends mailings arrived and a friend confirmed that the casting was principals only. Wonder what will happen to Wildor's roles - I'm wondering whether, given what seems to be happening at present, they'll just be shared out among the other principals?

I think that a lot of the RB regulars are going to get a bit bored if they get very little but the same half-dozen dancers appearing throughout the year. I know I shall - I'm already in "been there, done that" mode and was looking forward to seeing some casts I hadn't already seen. How is anyone supposed to progress in the company if they don't get a bite at leading roles? Will we end up pretty much with a principals/others divide, as has tended to be the case at ENB recently?

Look on the bright side, folks, at least in the UK you get to know the casting in advance! The Australian Ballet currently has an appauling policy of not releasing casting until two days before a season starts. Trying getting tickets to see your favourite dancers under those circumstances!

Incidently, I wouldn't worry about Ross Stretton only casting principals in the main roles. It certainly wasn't something he was noted for with the Australian Ballet. Mind you, having reduced the AB's principal ranks to virtually nil, it wasn't a very feasible option either...

This is all new to me and really interesting - but one small question...I notice that Cope has no performances in February and March - is this the normal way to treat a principal of the company?

This is making me feel extremely worried. I appreciate the cast dancers are excellent, but isn't this pushing them too far?

And how are we going to cope with so little Sylvie and Carlos?

Ross Strettons casting makes no sense, as I have mentioned before he is not using the experianced first soloists such as Burn, Valtat, Hatley, Tranah and Revie, only one male first soloist and new to the company, Yanowsky who has just been made up to principal, has nothing, Sylvie, well here is a mystery, and if he is not using Cope, who is he going to use, to take guest artists is crazy, and costs a lot of money, also why put on Nureyev Don Q when the Royal has a perfectly good Don Q , more wasted money. is Stretton going to bring the Royal to its knees, as he nearly did with Austalian, Sarah has gone which means no Adam who we were hoping would return, and who will be next to say au revoir to The Royal Ballet.
