"Our thoughts are with Alexandra and BalletAlert"

I'm not registered and can't post there quickly but I hope that Alexandra and all at BalletAlert are all safe given the terrible news of what has happened in Washington and New York. Alexandra is actually based in Washington for those that don't know and I'm sure that all our thoughts are with them.

Gosh, thanks, Bruce -- and to others who've emailed. We have a thread up on BA so that people can check in to let us know they're okay. Dale saw both towers collapse and gave her account, and I'm certainly open to others who'll do the same. Personally, I live near the Capitol but not the Pentagon, so (so far) I'm fine. You may hear that the city is being evacuated, but that means people who work here and live in the suburbs are leaving, not that they're making residents leave. Compared to New York, we were very fortunate.

In New York, there are a lot of dance studios near the World Trade Center, so there may well be people we all know who've been affected -- not to mention the passengers on FOUR commercial airlines who were headed to Los Angeles or San Francisco. I think we're just at the beginning of learning how much damage has been done.

Thanks for your thoughts.

A deeply distressing action. Our thoughts, as you say Bruce must be with with friends and everyone in America.

What fragile things peace and democracy are.

From a US poster....thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers. No matter where we live, we are all simply stunned and near tears all the time.

I was on my way to Los Angeles when I heard the news but simply came home instead. LA is pretty much shut down, performances of plays and dance have been cancelled for tonight. No word yet when things will get back to some sense of normalcy.

There are little words one can say to our friends across the water save to say that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

New York City is a city I love deeply. Whenever I was in New York I was a frequent visitor to large Borders Book Shop in the World Trade Center. Across the street J and R Music is one of the better and cheaper music/entertainment shops.

Now it is all gone. Certainly Borders has.

The free world will never be the same after this. The only real defense we had for our building and other mass gathering places is that no is that evil enough and intelligent to want to commit mass murder. But there are clearly some who do and we are indefensible against it. We will ever enter a large building or stadium with the same carefree attitude as before? A blow to our freedom as been struck

A small casualty in a larger war. Just got this press release from the Mark Morris company:

--------------------------------------

We have cancelled tomorrow's Grand Opening of the Morris building. Everyone's OK.More later when appropriate.

Hope you and your loved ones are safe as well.

--------------------------------------

Another note. Tonight, the Kennedy Center was closed. I can't remember that happening, and I moved to Washington the year it opened.

Broadway was dark tonight - I think it's the first time since the JFK assassination, but we New Yorkers may be bloodied but we are unbowed.

I turned on my Tv at 9:01 Tues. a.m. to see the first tower building on fire and thus saw "live" the second plane hit the other tower. I was glued to the TV all day. My husband doesn't work anywhere near the WTC and so was safe - although he did have a long walk home, as there weren't any buses or subway trains, and taxis were hard to come by.

What happened was so unreal that I still think I'm going to wake up in the morning and find out it was all a bad dream. They also found a van with explosives in it under the George Washington Bridge. I live near it, and if that had blown up my building might have been affected.

I keep thinking about the unfortunate people who were trapped in the towers and especially of the people on the 4 airplanes that were hijacked. (Amazing that the planes were hijacked with KNIVES!) There are still people trapped in the rubble. A lot of the top firefighters and police were killed when the towers collapsed, and many, many more were trapped inside, because they had gone in to help clear people out. They still hope to get some out alive, but the wreckage was too hot earlier on and is too unstable for them to go in yet. I think they are waiting until morning now.

Sorry this is so incoherent, but my thoughts are a bit disoriented now. I spoke with pmeja, who also posts here, and I know she, too, is ok, as she lives nowhere near the WTC.

NYCB was due to dance yesterday evening at the Teatro Regio in Parma. I read on the newspaper that a few minutes before the beginning of the performance the major and Peter Martins went on stage and announced the audience sitting in the orchestra and the boxes the cancellation.

thanks, felursus. casting about for something one can do i and others wanted very much to donate blood, but were told we couldn't as we had spent a certain amount of time in the u.k. in a certain number of years. how frustrating. a roommate was on his way to work late when he saw the news on television, and his company (cantor fitzgerald), who occupied a number of higher floors (101-105 or something) on the first tower, no longer existed; all of his mates at work are gone. and had he been on time he would have been gone too. he's not doing terribly well this morning and spent most of the time yesterday trying to reach his mum and dad in the u.k. (he did thank heaven or i would have asked a ballet.co'er to do it) to tell them he was all right. the kind words from everyone really help. thank you so much.

What can I say, other than I express my sincere sympathy to everyone who has suffered due to this act of pure evil. My heart goes out to everyone affected across the world. I read the list of fatalities shown on TV this morning and I see an innocent girl of 2 years old was on one of the planes - that brought it home to me and I just feel so sick for all the poor families who are now suffering deeply. God bless you all.

Paul Ben-Itzak who runs an American dance site, The Dance Insider, sent this email to his readers.

PARIS -- On the BBC tonight, crackly and heard through a constant eerie whistling in my short-wave reception, we are hearing instant description of today's attacks on New York City and Washington, instant reaction and, from talking heads, suggested response. New Yorkers themselves are too shell-shocked to think of anything except to make sure their loved ones are okay, and assure their loved ones outside of New York that they are okay. But the analysts are prescribing, to various degrees, hitting back.

Me, I can't get past the image of those plane passengers, helplessly sacrificed to the altar of someone else's hate. Not even the targets of that hate -- as Timothy McVeigh might put it, just "collateral damage."

At first I recalled the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco, but really, that pales -- while we felt helpless to defend ourselves against that act of nature because of the randomness and unpredictability of earthquakes, this tragedy adds another layer: How can one comprehend, in one's heart, and how can one live in a world with -- hate. For while a kernel of a cause may be sited by the perpetrators to "justify" this carnage in their minds, that cause is just a match, really, to fuel the cinders of what really is purely hate. Hate that lurks in some souls waiting for a cause to excuse an act of violence, even one towards innocents. Ghandi knew this; you don't answer violence with violence. Here in Europe and particularly France, where the memory of how hate was channeled to kill the Jews is still vivid, the power of hate is strongly felt.

But how...how do you live in a world with that hate? How do you not turn dark in your own soul in response?

You respond to hate with light, as my friend Dean might say. Will that light extinguish hate in every heart where it lurks? I don't know. Will it, tho, present an alternative? A different way? I think so. And will it empower you? I think so.

We are blessed to be part of a community that creates light: Dance. Several years ago I gave up political journalism for dance journalism precisely for this reason. As a political journalist, really all I could do is report on the dimensions of hate, and, perhaps, prescribe a solution and response which, while logical, would not really reach the hearts where hate had lodged most securely.

But entering the world of dance, at a time in my life when I was exposed to some negativity, I discovered its power to uplift almost literally into the light.

What I'm saying is that while it is easy and understandable to feel helpless in the face of this attack, you in fact, dance insider -- by your work whether you are a dancer or someone whose work supports the dance -- you are exercising the most valuable of responses, one which will probably be shouted out in the coming years: to answer hate with light. You can't "fight" hate. But I think by your art, by our art we offer an alternative. A different way. Don't underestimate the strength of that vision -- nor your power to offer it.

I am sure we all feel sympathy and sadness at the terrible events in America. I note that one of the very brave victims of the hijackers was an ex ballet dancer. Barbara Olsen lawyer and wife of the US Solicitor General was a former dancer for Houston and San Francisco ballet.
