"Casting for Onegin???"

Sorry to bang on about casting again,

but does anyone know whether the casting is known for Onegin?

It didn't say in the booklet and I can't find it on the ROH website...

only because I got my tickets yesterday and am curious to know who dances who.....

I think they said casting would be announced in October. I'm waiting until I know who is dancing before I book - I've given up my Friends booking priority because of this - it's annoying.

Yes I've given up my Priority booking for this reason too. In fact, I'm now only using Priority for things which I think will sell out (mostly opera), because I find I can usually choose much better seats if I go in to the box office myself.

They will start to notice when they don't sell so many tickets.

Has anybody complained to the ROH or to The Friends or are we all muttering in private?

Be interested to know the response if anybody has raised this.

In the past I used to complain via The Friendsd and they applied pressure internaly but - personally - I find the current management of The Friends very complacent, typical of the whole tone of the place since the re-opening.

In the past when Bamber Gascoigne was the chair he was very helpful, getting Friends' priority reinstated into the subscription scheme that they used to run.

Its worth doing a search on Onegin to get the flavour of what has been said before.

I'm sure RB well know that trying to sell a ballet without casting is very hard. However those who own Onegin want to do it their way and I don't think RB can change this - other than not to have decided to dance it in the first place of course...

I've often wondered about the internal organisation and activities of the Friends. It's a very large group with (if I recall correctly) about 50,000 members - at 55 pounds per year that's quite a bit of money.

There's not very much information available (even to Friends) about how the Friends decide to allocate funds. I don't know how much goes on opera and how much on ballet. Some of the Friends events are excellent.

I'm not trying to get at the Friends here in any way - I am genuiunely curious. There seem to be enormous lists of committees. Can anyone shed a little light on how the Friends plan their programmes or decide which prgrammes to sponsor ?

It does seem a bit odd that Friends membership gives you priority booking for the main house, but not for performances in the Linbury and Clore, unless its a Friends event. I would have thought the Friends might have supported some of the work of the ADI in the Clore etc - but is this seen as outside their remit because it can involve outside choreographers ?

Can anyone shed any further light ?

Reid Anderson has indicated that he will not be willing to finalise casting for Onegin until October. He is responsible for the staging (and his partner, Dieter Grafe owns it). If there are any accusations of high-handedness, then maybe they should be directed in his/their direction. Rumours abound as to who he wants and most definitely does not want. There are four Tatianas lined up, as far as I understand, and maybe a few surprises amongst them. Indeed, Mr Anderson will certainly ruffle a few feathers. We'll all have to wait and hope that there aren't too many other producers who disregard audience needs quite so blatantly!

If getting accusations of the high-handedness of the Royal Ballet acros to the Royal Ballet is difficult, how much harder must it be to get it across to Messrs Anderson and Grafe?

In any case, I am not sure such accusations would be appropriate.

Of course, if they own this ballet and are responsible for the standards of its presentation, I for one would not deny them the right or responsibility of casting it.

Equally, I'm sure most people would rather the Royal Ballet performs Onegin without announcing casting, than does not do it at all.

The Royal Ballet has created an obligation for itself by previously announcing casting in advance. It has done this because it is good box office. When it chooses not to do so, it is the Royal Opera House whose box office will lose out.

If there are four Tatianas lined up with some surprises among them, that is great news. It will be wonderful to see some unexpected dancers in the lead - but if they are lined up I don't know why we can't be told who they are.

One further point, Messrs Anderson and Grafe have presumably no involvement in the lack of casting information for Beyond Bach and The Leaves are Fading - which has still not been announced.

I believe I read that Anderson will be bringing in guest artists for Onegin? Also I have heard they will be touring Sydney next year with Onegin as part of the repertoire, does anyone know more about this?

Didn't Corella and Stiefel just do a run of performances as Lensky with ABT in June?
