"dancer"

i recently saw the royal ballet in boston do swan lake. I enjoyed the performance and was particularly pleased by one female dancer in the beginning who danced a pas de trois. The dancers listed in the program are alina cojocaru, mara galeazzi and justin meissner. Assuming justin meissner is male, that leaves alina cojocaru and mara galeazzi. I came to the sight expecting to see pictures of the dancers so that I could tell who was who. Well, there aren't any pictures and I could barely find their names.
Any way I can find pictures of the dancers or discover who this girl is????????

That does help. I think it was alina cojocaru. She also had a beautiful smile. In my efforts to get some more info I did a search on her name and it turns out there's actually a girl named alina carmen cojocaru who's a mathematician. I was surprised there are no pictures of the dancers. the boston ballet web site has pictures and bios. ballet dancers should have numbers on thir outfits like baseball players so we can tell who is who. Thanks again for the info. i hope the royal ballet comes back to boston soon or perhaps even better that i get to london. I'd love to see the company dance again. as i am a relatively new ballet fan i am kind of proud of myself that i was so taken with this dancer as soon as she came on the stage. a principal at nineteen is pretty cool. i hope she has a brilliant and long career. she is a lovely dancer.
thanks again

We'd love lots of pictures - but there are copyright issues in using many of them. Most photographers are wary of the net and feel they will get ripped-off etc. There are some things we might do on this but it takes time and time is in very short supply I'm afraid.

Re Cojocaru we have lots of information - suggest you do a search in our Reviews and Interviews databases (in Links section - see button at the top of this page).

We'd like to be perfect, but cost nobody a dime and yet are one of the best independent sites in the world. I'd love the budget and resources that Boston and other companies have to spend on their sites!

Finally you might think us The Royal Ballet's own website - we are not. That's at http://www.royalopera.org/ However as you will see there are not so many pictures there either!

   Annie/Bruce

How tall is Mara?

is she about 5'5"?

Would be interested to know!! as a friend of mine who is a fantastic dancer and has just completed her training at the RBS was rejected because she is only 5'!

Such a shame!

Very few female dancers in the UK are as tall as 5'5" - even Darcey and Sylvie are not much taller than that (5'7"), and most of the RB are much shorter (about 5'2" seems to be the norm, and Alina, Miyako and Leanne are, I would say, smaller still). Maybe the trend is changing, but Alina Cojocaru is tiny tiny tiny and hasn't been around very long. As an example, I'm 5'6" myself and thought, from how she looked on stage, that Deborah Bull was a similar size. When I saw her off stage I realised how wrong I was! I wonder if there were other reasons and height is just the one they've given your friend?

ps Mara Galeazzi is perhaps not as conventionally "pretty" as Alina Cojocaru - she looks a little like Viviana Durante and a llittle like Leanne Benjamin, both of whose pictures should be easy to find - but I think she's a wonderful dancer.

Thanks so much for all this info Anneliese...it has put my mind at rest!

The RBS said that she was too short to study and go on to the RB! and only gave her a teaching place! She rejected that and trains somewhere in london!

Yeah, I've heard from friends who've gone to summer schools and the like that the RB is favouring tall leggy types at the moment. It must be incredibly frustrating to be rejected on the grounds of not being the current fashionable shape.

Ha! That's a good idea! I have sometimes thought along those lines myself! I have often wondered if there is a convention about listing the cast of say, a pas de trois, in a programme. For example, is the girl who dances the first solo variation listed first? I have tried to work this out, but if the first soloist also happens to have a name higher up the alphabet, you can never prove that it's not simply an alphabetical listing.

Try this link. It has fantastic images of lots of RB dancers including Alina in the pas de trois.

If you go to http://www.performingartslibrary.co.uk,
click on the first image,
click on the 'picture search' link
scroll down and click 'log in as guest'
click 'pal collection'
do a search for Cojocaru or Royal Ballet

and voila! Enjoy!

Have you considered putting this on your links page Bruce? It's a great resource for recent RB images, and is updated every so often.

...BRB, DNB, Kirov, etc images as well. A search for 'ballet' should cover them all.
