"Ballets Minerva"

Does anyone have any information, please, about Ballets Minerva? The company appears to have been active in Britain for about twenty years between 1950 and 1970. I have been able to trace seven performances given by Ballets Minerva at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall, between 1954 and 1970, and one performance at the Library Theatre, Manchester, on 25 August 1969 - each one just billed as a 'mixed programme'. Then the company seems to fade from record. Who were the guiding spirits? Who were the dancers, and what was their repertoire?

well david, i raided (cyberspeaking) the ny public library and found this much:
1. an article in "Ballet Today" dated February 1958
2. an article in the Dancing Times dated February 1964
3. an article in Dance and Dancers dated December 1959
4. an article in the Dancing Times dated June 1967
5. another article in the Dancing Times dated December 1957
6. an article in Dance Magazine dated July 1966
and the following:
7. in a listing marked "Programs":Includes program for a performance by the dance company at St. Georges' Hall, Exeter, England, 12 Aug. 1971. Founder and artistic director: Edward Gaillard; assistant artistic director and principal dancer: Kathleen Gray.
as well as a listing for a group of clippings about which since i cannot see them i cannot say!
hope that is helpful.

I made the same check as pmeja, and had a look at some of those articles. Edward Gaillard was a dancer who founded Ballets Minerva when the company he was in folded. He worked out what was the absolute minimum size for a ballet company - 9 dancers - and designed the ballets so that everything - dancers, sets, etc - could be transported in one vehicle. The company did a huge number of performances and only got an Arts Council grant quite late in its career.

There's more but I don't have time just now...

Whilst I can't remember what the repertoire consisted of, other than mixed programmes, I certainly remember seeing Ballets Minerva several times in the early-mid 1960s and the name of Kathleen Grey is familiar. They used to perform regularly at the Town Hall in Cheltenham - not even on the stage of our local theatre!

I seem to remember taking a group of school children to see them at the Civic Theatre in Bedford in the 70's at least I think that's who we saw and it might have been something like Peter and the Wolf but it's so long ago my memory may be playing tricks.
