"SYLVIE GUILLEM"

Does anyone know of any videos in VHS format of Sylvie dancing? If so, where are they available to buy?

Also, how can I find out about any of her upcoming performances?

It existed on VHS from POB Cinderella by Nureyev, role created for and by her. And you have several documentaries who must exist in video but nothing recent.

Welcome...

I just did a search on our Home Page search and found a review from our December 1997 edition of Ballet.co magazine of Guillem in POB's Cinderella
http://www.ballet.co.uk/dec97/video_em_2.htm

I did a search of Postings with Guillem and Video searched for and that brings back lots of entries but I think few of them are really useful - but great fun sorting though. This link does the search but you'd be best advised, as with all these searches, to experiment and do a few yourself (note it can take a few secs for the link to do its work):
http://www.danze.co.uk/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=search&s_forum=all&fields=ALL&days=0&keywords=Guillem%20video

We do have an awful lot of material here about Sylvie...

Reviews - over 120 of nearly 2500 are about Guillem. This links brings them up:
http://www.ballet.co.uk/cgi/reviews_database_search/db_search.cgi?dancer_names=guillem

Interviews - 13 where she is center of attention:
http://www.ballet.co.uk/cgi/theviews_db_search/db_search.cgi?title=guillem

InterViews - where she appears in any Nes/InterView piece (56 links)
http://www.ballet.co.uk/cgi/theviews_db_search/db_search.cgi?names=guillem

And of course there is the Sylvie Guillem page at:
http://www.ballet.co.uk/links/dancers_sylvie_guillem.htm

And Jim Fowlers lovely site at:
http://www.dmu.ac.uk/~jafowler/sylvie.html

Hope you enjoy all we have. And have to ask... why do you enjoy Guillem so much?

   Dear Bruce,

I am surprised to see you asking that kind of question:
"why do you enjoy Guillem so much",

We know for ages now:
some people like her,
and some people don't,
some people are "in love"with her,
and some people "hate"her,

It seems that Meesh likes her,or want to discover her,(big deal!)the discussion is closed no?
Or everybody gonna have to explain AGAIN why he likes or don't like her?

No discussion is ever closed I think - and just as well because new points of view emerge and times move on.

>Or everybody gonna have to explain
>AGAIN why he likes or

Nobody has to do anything they don't want to. At any one time a proportion of readers will be wondering why on earth something is being debated. It would be a funny world if eveybody liked every conversation they had everywhere. This doesn't seem to be one for you - hopefully there are others that do engage you or you might decide to start a debate of interest to you...

   Dear Bruce,

I was reffering that "Sylvie Guillem" is a very sensitive subject, because people are very passionnate about her.

Very often, people become rude toward each other, when they discuss about her(look what's happened with the subject about her Giselle)

That's why I wanted to say:"please,no more arguing between fans of her and detractors of her"!

Sorry,if I don't express myself very well in English,it's not my mother language.

Thanks for all your input. I will check out all the sites you have listed.

Why do I love Sylvie? It's unexplainable how I feel about her dancing. She was ethereal in Giselle. There are really no words to describe her dancing - my teacher who also saw her performance said she is a gift from God, and I will have to say I agree.

It depends which country you are in: do you need VHS-PAL or VHS-NTSC?

We are in the United States, and I believe our format is VHS NTSC.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

As far as I know, nothing is available in this format.

You will need to obtain a multi-system video player in order to play European videos.

Multi-system video players are now widely available and very reasonably priced. I've often wondered why people who love ballet and wish to see the widest possible range of ballet videos don't already possess one. In fact, if you have bought a new video player within the last two or three years it is unlikely to be a one-system machine anyway.

yes but although multisystem video recorders/players are inexpensive here, we have to have special televisions to use them with as our televisions are incapable of showing pal/secam etc. there are machines by some manufacturers that are sold as 'converters' which sell from 500 to 700-800 dollars that will work with every television, as opposed to the 200 dollars that the multisystem machines might cost. sigh.

This is the route I took - the Aiwa is a converter VCR capable of going from NTSC to PAL and back again...and it was just under $500. Rather spendy, but it has allowed me to see many more ballets than are available in the US.
