"Virus/Bug or what?"

I think I have picked up some bug which locks into the ballet.co site. I have had messages purporting to come from ballet.co, Bruce, Anneliesse, etc. and chucking them back to me as the sender. I certainly didn't send out any such things and I can't delete them either. Has anyone else had this problem?

   Ann

I've had it/still got it. In fact, today I had a message from you, so I knew you'd got it too! The main thing to remember (obviously) is not to open any attachments, to delete suspect messages and then delete the contents of your wastebasket.

These virusus are not at all amusing. Although I haven't actually lost anything, my whole system has been thrown into a mess - icons have disappeared etc. and I have to coax my way around the system - I may have to resort to paying for a Mr Fixit. Anyway, I have now had anti-virus software installed so hopefully I will be protected against future attack.

This is horrid Ann, really horrid. I have had 100-200 copies of the virus come in now and got one from you yesterday. Do as Ann Williams says and get the Anti-virus software.

But one of the things that you mention fills me with more horror - messages purporting to come form Ballet.co and/or I and containing the virus. I'm pretty sure I have not had this virus. Pretty sure. Also that the site does not send out email with attachments on and therefore it can't spread the virus and it can't harbour it either. All of which raises the spectre that possibly somebody is acting maliciously in this. Can you forward to me any emails you got purporting to come from me and which have an attachment etc. The text of the message starts:

"Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

Thanks. Goodness knows what fun people get out of doing things with virus's

He uses the address book of one infected person and send exactly the message that Bruce indicated above. I receive it several times since august beginning it's not RED ATTACK but SIRCAM ATTACK

Ann - yup, I've had a copy of that email from you too. It's the TROJ_SIRCAM.A which is very popular at the moment. Luckily people seem to be doing their cleanups now and the rate I'm getting plastered with these emails - I'm beating Bruce on the total so far I think - is slowing up at last.

You can find instructions for cleaning this virus off your system at:

http://www.antivirus.com/

And I highly recommend their software!

   Ann,

If you are getting messages bounced back to you as the sender then your email addy has possibly been hijacked at a crossover point on a server somewhere. This is done by spammers to ensure that their own address doesn't get banned for spamming. You need to get this dealt with or you may find your address is blacklisted by some servers. Contact your service provider asap and advise them of the problem, sending them an example of the email with the headers included, and they will trace the source for you and make an official complaint against the sender.

Best of luck,

Caz

10. "SirCam virus fix -- please read if you think you are infected"
In response to message #9

If you click on an icon and get "cannot find SirCam.exe" you are infected. If you got an email with language similar to the ones posted above that have an attachment, and you clicked on the attachment -- and it will come from someone you know -- you are infected.

There are virus fixes on line -- Ann, you don't need to call a Mr. Fix-It, but I think you should run a virus fix. My program is Norton (Symantec) so that's the only one I know; I'm sure McAfee and other virus software sites have similar fixes. But I know this one works, because I used it:

For anyone who thinks he/she has been infected, you can do a free virus scan at www.symantec.com.

If you know you have been infected, removing the virus isn't enough. You have to take extra removal measures. Here is a free link, at Symantec. Download it, follow the instructions, it takes less than five minutes and it seems to work:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.removal.tool.html

As Ann noted, be sure to empty your recycle bin -- the virus sends copies of itself there!

Also, please don't "turn in" the sender of the email that infected you, as this person is an innocent victim as well. The virus gets into one address book, and then activates what is essentially a universe-wide chain letter.

I can't stress highly enough the importance of having good, up-to-date anti-virus software. If you own a computer, then you really must get some - it's as vital as your browser or word-processor program, if not more so. Our software at work is frequently warding off some extremely damaging viruses (including this one) which might otherwise have caused total chaos and hours of downtime and repair work. Avoiding getting some for cost/hassle reasons really is short-sighted - you are likely to incur more costs/hassle trying to get rid of the blasted things, let alone putting right all the damage that they've wreaked!

Caz: Nice one!
Alison and all else: Alison is absolutely right about the need for Anti-virus software. But always be vigilent for yourself too... a few people will always be causght before the Virus people know there is another one to be stamped on. It pays to be suspicious of all attachements I'm afraid.

Opening an email message should be fine - if you opened an attachement, succesfully or otherwise, you should be worried and go get the Anti-virus software mentioned above.

Sorry there is not context to put any of this in - what file to download etc? Suggest you contact your system adminstrator or see the anti-virus sites for descriptions of the latest virus's and what they look like

I'm not aware of user profiles being disabled - I just pressed on yours (the little head associated with your name and email address etc on your postings) and it returned brief details about you as I would expect...

Beaware that there are still very many of these messages on the net - I'm still getting several per day and I think Jane mentioned that she got an order of magnitude more than that yesterday. Probably best not to name folks - nobody plans to get caught like this and its so very prevalent

   Interesting isn't it...

The TROJ_SIRCAM.A virus sends itself to the people on an infected system's email address list. Fascinating to see the huge variety of people who have my email addy on their list. Now I know where a lot of my junk email is really coming from...

And Ann, you're right - far more instances of this email are dance related than come from any other source. Maybe this just means that people who are interested in dance are less vigilant?

I deleted an email from a couple of unknown senders, but then found that when I next tried to access balletco through outlook express I got a porn site. It was not ballet related in any way as the ladies had rather large bosoms, and, with partners appeared to succeed in doing what the couple in Balanchine’s ‘Bugaku’ failed to manage last week. I can cope with it and have deleted it but could it be part of this mysterious bug? I am a bit worried that it will reappear when my wife tries to look at the ROH and ENO sites, fortunately my grandchildren are in France.
PS I have got ballet.co back via internet options/settings.Lets hope the porn does not return!

Good grief!

Not sure about the Outlook Express bit - I don't use it but I thought that was email software and not something you'd use to get to us.

About 2 or 3 years ago something similar to this happened to a reader but there it seemed to be some datagrams (low level web stuff) getting mixed and some content expected elsewhere got corrupted and landed in the wrong place. Given that 40% of web traffic (or some high number) is porn related you stand a good chance of seeing porn if such a thing happens - tough the stats are such that it is very, very rare occurrence. It was not a Ballet.co thing and if the person had been looking at the BBC or Church of England web site the same could have happened.

Given what you say later about resetting options it sounds like Internet Explorer (assume that what you mean) got zapped. There are some websites out there that run hidden code or try to and do various things to IE on your behalf though normally one would have security set so that you are asked before running scripts etc. And sometimes people play practical jokes of course.... At work one occasionally finds that ones Home page has been reset to something less ordinary...

For ourselves I'm pretty sure there is no way that the Ballet.co web site can deliver a virus to you or alter settings on your browser.
