"San Francisco Ballet casting and rosters"
| |
August 13, 2001 As readers will notice and attendees register, there are some dancers listed in the roster for ballet.co, who have gone elsewhere. Claudia Alfieri is now dancing for Michael Smuin; Christopher Stowell has retired, and among the corps, Ikolo Griff has joined Dance Theatre of Harlem with soloist status. I was fascinated to read who the first and second casts are in the various ballets - I recently saw Diana and Vilanoba in Symphony in Three Movements - second movement -- quite marvelous. The Feijoo/Rykine partnering in the Bach should be extremely interesting as well, a worthy second to Berman/Possokhov. Have not seen Quartette ever, and I envy the CG attendees that. Do post lots and lots of comments! I await breathlessly!

Dear Renee, You need not worry. The first performance by SFB at CG was, as far as I'm concerned, the balletic highlight of the British year thus far. (Ross, please note, now's a great time to go shopping.) Wonderful repertory of pure dance in the balletic idiom, committed musiciality in choreography, interesting ideas through dance and a company that sang through all with precision, both individually and, more to the point, as the great company that they currently are. What a treat. On second thought, Ross, hide that list. Here, the whole was much more than the sum of its parts - glowing brilliantly as they were - and, surely, that deserves to be preserved whilst it can. We'd all be much poorer without it. |

August 13, 2001 Wow! Meunier, what an accolade! I was thinking coming home from a 24 block trek that the first performance would be about over, and I could look forward to observations this p.m. after a meeting. I also realized that I failed to mention that David Palmer left the company at the end of the of May, 2000. He is co- artistic director with Yanis Pakieris of the Maximum Dance Company in Miami. Your observation about the sum being greater than the parts I think is particularly true of S.F. Ballet, even though most people have a favorite or think some one is particularly special. I enjoy the star system, but in the long run we look at the galaxy just as much! Do let me know more!
