Pete, this is great for people who subscribe to a Cable or Satellite channel. For those of us who don't, it is less than useless. Would be good to put pressure on BBC2, South Bank or Channel 4 to produce more dance programmes. Whatever happened to 'Summer Dance'? Nevertheless, keep up the good work

   Ann,

I agree with your comments regarding the terrestrial channels. The list represents the ignorance afforded to dance by the various broadcasting companies. The satellite & cable channels are only marginally better with their endless repeats!

> Would be good to
>put pressure on BBC2, South
>Bank or Channel 4 to
>produce more dance programmes.

Too true - I urge you and all who care about the lack of dance on TV & Radio in this country to use the following feedback links ....

BBC TV -Points of View

BBC Radio

Channel 4
or <mailto:viewerenquiries@channel4.co.uk>

Channel 5

(Contact your local independent broadcaster for ITV channels)

Do something about it! -you may get a scripted reply, but at least the more of us that speak up, the more likely we are to make ourselves heard!
Let them know.....

BALLET IS NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS!!!!!

   >The satellite & cable channels are only marginally better with their endless repeats!<

But Pete, I don't think you can blame the satellite and cable channels for these 'endless repeats' - they cannot actually commission ballet or dance programmes (not yet anyway) and are therefore reliant on the same commercially-available videos that most of us already have anyway. So I think we'll just have to bash away at the dear old Beeb and ITV to provide more made-for-televison dance programmes. Since opera suffers nearly as badly, I wonder why it isn't possible to set up a terrestrial subscription channel which would cover both dance and opera as well as other arts interests? I certainly wouldn't object to paying a (reasonable) quarterly subscription if I could be guaranteed to see at least one new dance programme a month.

Or am I just pipe-dreaming?

I am not singling out any channel for particular criticism, they all need to do more!

I do not see why the cable & satellite channels cannot commission new works apart from commercial viability (-pay per view anyone?) Truthfully, I feel that these channels are being sedentary in churning out the same old fare. Artsworld for instance, seems to have quite rich parents (BSkyB, Caledonia Investments, Guardian Media Group), but perhaps I'm missing something else. I would pay a lot more to see the funding of new works and more live broadcasts of dance.

I acknowledge that every single fringe of the arts wants a 'piece of the action' but as far as opera v. ballet goes, ballet pulls in more viewers than opera when broadcast (-so where is Summer Dance!?) What is more ironic is that as far as terrestrial telly goes, the BBC airs far more dance than any of the other 'advertising-funded' channels. I think all would agree that this year, compared to recent years, dance has been all but ignored.

I do feel that without 'whinging', dance will be pushed to later slots, and eventually fade from our screens. If we don't want that to happen we need to tell them about it!!

..........and even for those of us who have digital (terrestrial), but happen to work, this still presents the challenge of figuring out how to record from On Digital! Ideas gratefully received.

And thanks to Pete for the good work..........

Great work Pete. Please continue to post any listings you find whether it's terrestial TV or otherwise. I think we definately need to put pressure on the big BBC bosses to allocate more dance slots. I live in a very rural place and ballet companies only appear about 3 times a year here if I'm lucky so it's great to be able to see the big ballet companies on TV. We need to make the TV bosses see there is an audience for dance and ballet TV. Happy dance watching everyone.

Oh, definitely. A while back, I think someone posted a way of emailing or something the director of BBC2, who's the obvious one to speak to. Could whoever it was please remind us of it?

And someone else, again I can't remember who, seemed to have found a page on the BBC website that listed upcoming programmes, not just those for the next week. Again, if she could post it, perhaps we could see if there's any sign of Summer Dance coming up (surely they're not holding the Firebird/Les Noces transmission back for Christmas, are they?).

I've just popped over to Artsworld's website and found this very useful link, showing details of what ballet and dance programmes they have on for the next month or so (looks like quite a lot!):

http://www.artsworld.com/tv/programme-highlights/ballet-on-artsworld.html

(NB: The site looks a lot more lively than it did last time I had a good look at it - try clicking on the link at the top of this page to visit it).
