"Ballet Music"

If you had the chance to choose a piece of music to be used in any ballet what would it be? and what would the ballet be about?

I would love to see a ballet danced to Vaughan Williams on a Theme of Thomas Tallis set in a deserted cathedral with lots of candles...

also, I would love to see a ballet about the 4 elements; earth, wind, fire and water danced to more modern music....(Thom Willems?)

What do you all think?

Lily

I would like to see Verdi's ballet music utilized more (OK there is a Robbins ballet but it is not one of his best).

Some of the finest ballet music was written by Verdi.

Another work I would love see set to dance is Brahm's Deutsche Requiem. An extraodinary work which is contemplative - it is more concerned with those left behind and their sadness. If Das Lied von der Erde can be set to dance anything can!!

   Eugene
The John Cranko ballet The Lady and the Fool was to Verdi music arranged by Charles Mackerras. Pretty tuneful stuff and some half dozen companies mounted the work. It was an entertaining ballet if a little overlong and both Kenneth MacMillan, the creator and Peter Wright gave excellent performances in the leading role.

Didn't MacMillan choreography a piece called 'The Four Seasons' to Verdi music? I had a treasured tape of Viviana Durante and Errol Pickford dancing it for the Eric Bruhn competition (which they won) several years ago (1988?)but sadly I seem to have lost it.

I think so Ann. At the end of the video of Winter Dreams, there is a profile on Irek and he and Viviana dance "Summer Pdd" by MacMillan in a rehersal studio wearing iridescent orange.

Lovely dancing though!
