"Please lets stop being so personal"

I find many off the postings about dancers getting to personal, there is much one can criticize, but please stop making comments about the dancers bodies, I have never seen a fat dancer in The Royal Ballet, I have been in the girls dressing rooms, and can assure everyone there is not any dancer who is overweight.
Is it sour grapes that some like to pick dancers apart? or just frustration that they cannot look good.
These posting are read worldwide, and it is very unfair to the girls, to make such personal remarks.
One has the right to critcize, performances, but please keep your personal thoughts to yourselfs, and if you have nothing nice to say, please do not post, I personaly are tired of reading such negative views.

I completely agree with you. The postings you mention, almost always under the cover of anonymity, are not in the spirit of these pages. They are desperately hurtful and have nothing to do with honest criticism. What I also find infuriating is that these posts pop up out of nowhere. We have never heard from these people on other topics - and having made their hateful comments, they melt back into obscurity. Enough.

I certainly have little respect for those who post anonymously - especially non-trivial views on anything.
(think I'd better shut up now!)

   Well that's told us!

It's not the first time this has come up and it won't be the last I'm sure.

This board is about tolerance in all things. Its the tolerance of letting others say what you completely disagree with and making points with good grace. Its the tolerance of understanding dancers have a bloody hard life and pilling on some more 'stuff' may not be that constructive. Its the tolerance of understanding that dace is primarily visual and if bodies don't fit or look right that can jar for some.

For my part I'm not jealous of the bodies I see on stage (well I am, but that's not a central point!) - but I might privately criticise some because the line might not look right or is spoiled. Dance is visual and the body is part of the visuals. Dancers know this and its another thing they worry about along with all the others stuff. And I've certainly seen big dancers in RB and other companies. some even freely talk about it as an issue - Irek has mentioned it a sometimes in interviews I think and many regulars have seen him go through slim, and not so slim, phases.

Criticising somebody for not looking quite right is desperately difficult I think, hard to pull-off with dignity for anybody, and therefore probably best not done. But I would never moderate that this is a no-go area. Its best left alone but supper sensitivity required if you do go there.

Whoops, meant to mention this.... We are not the Hello of dance publishing(!) and not everything we might talk about has to be nice or even have a 'nice' element. I hope however that when we are negative there is something constructive in there.

Life is not always 'nice' and this board should not portray things differently.

Ballet has been described as the oldest beauty contest in the world!

This is a visual art - the body of a dancer is part of the art so it is fair comment on a dancers shape or body. But it is only one aspect of a dancer. Many a dancer can get away with only average (by ballet standards) body and looks and yet still be admired for great acting, feeling and depth. And with some dancers their great looks overshadow their dancing.
