"Ballet costume design - can anyone help?"

I am about to write my uni dissertation - "Is the tutu dead?" The changes in costume design and the influence of fashion in modern ballet'. If anybody can help in anyway, either through pointers of where best to find info, good books worth a read or just any comments on costume design in ballet in the last 100years or so, it would be seriously helpful! My email is ruthbagnall@hotmail.com, so if you have any opinions or interesting stuff, let me know!

Ruth,

There is a very intresting little French book on tutu's :

'Le tutu' - petit guide . Edition Flammarion pour L'Opéra National de Paris. (71pages)

It covers the history, the making and the choice of fabrics.
This book is a 'must-have' with lots of beautiful pictures.
They also mention that there doesn't exist a real study on tutu's
(in France, I suppose).
There is a large bibliography-list but most of the publications are no longer available, so you have to go to the library.

Just noticed it's available at the Opéra-shop in Paris :
http://www.opera-de-paris.fr
(boutique - produits)
I'm sure it is possible to find it in UK too.

Ruth, I don't know where in the country (or even the world!) you are, but if you're anywhere near London Westminster Reference Library (off the south side of Leicester Square) has a very good specialist section on ballet. I don't think any of the books are available to borrow, though.

   Thanks Alison!
I am not in London at the moment, but will be (hopefully) soon, so I will go and have a mooch!
