"Universal Ballet in New York"

I went to see the Universal Ballet's "Bayadere" (production by Oleg Vinogradov) and in general I was very favorably impressed. The company has been coached well and pay great attention to detail. Now and then their movement quality is more static than fluid, but in general their steps connect well, and one phrase to the other flows quite naturally. The production is quite lavish and done up both beautifully and appropriately. The corps de ballet had a couple of ragged moments in the shades scene, a wobble here and there, but when recovered from that, really did move as a unit. they are doing a few bayaderes and also some performances of 'shim chung', which is based on a korean folk tale. In all, this was a pleasant introduction to a company i had not seen before.

It's nice to hear you were pleased with your 'first viewing' of Universal Ballet.
I saw them only once -about 2 years ago- in 'Swan Lake'.
Sadly enough, this is stil the most disappointing performance I know.
Technically, the corps de ballet proved a lot of difficulties.
Worst of all : they just didn't show any involvement.
But I surely give them a second chance

I think pmema's comments are right in line with my thoughts about the performance. I saw it on Saturday evening. The company's accomplished a great deal but needs to sand down a few rough edges. I think their concentration on technical details should continue but they need to develop a more artful presentation.

As for production and costume, they really pulled out all the stops. By the time they hit act three, we might as well have been at a Las Vegas show. I believe they would have achieved more if they'd showed a bit of restraint.
