"A Monotones question"

I'm looking forward to seeing Monotones again soon. There's a nice picture of the original cast in the current RB (Hochhauser) programme, which also has some good pictures of Dowell and a feature on de Valois.

Ashton made Monotones on Dowell, Vyvyan Lorraine, and (if I have the name right) Robert Mead (and if I haven't someone will know the right answer.)

I've never heard anything very much about Vyvyan Lorraine (or is it Lorrayne ?) but it's such a striking role with such distinctive requirements, that I wonder what other works she appeared in or were made for her by Ashton or others at the time. Does anyone have any memories of her as a dancer ? Who else has performed the lead female role ?

I suppose I better pick this one up as I have seen Vyvyan Lorrayne on a number of occasions: Pas de six (Swan Lake) 19.12.59; Les Rendezvous 23.4.60; Swan (Swan Lake) 11.5.60; an ondine (Ondine) 2.3.61 and again 3.10.61; a villager (La fille mal gardée) 25.3.61 and again 25.10.61; Lilac Fairy and Fairy of Crystal Fountain (Sleeping Beauty) 13.5.61 and 26.5.62 respectively; Bathilde (Giselle) 14.3.70. I would be hard pushed to recall any specific reactions to her performance in these productions.

I note also that she danced as the Moon in Horoscope (1970); in The Grand Tour, arranged to music by Noel Coward in which she was disguised as an elderley American passenger. In Balanchine's Allegro Brillante - "an abstract arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Third Piano Concerto, a major test of classical dancing for ten performers led by Vyvyan Lorrayne". Then Peter Wright's El Amor Brujo with "Vyvyan Lorrayne and June Highwood as a sinuous pair of gypsies".

I hope this snippet may be of interest.

You don't happen to be going to see it next Thursday, I suppose, Lynette, when I am going especially to see A Month in the Country?

Only the haziest of meemories at the end of her career with SWRB. She was tending to do secondary roles - Red Queen opposite Maina Gielgud as Black Queen - so did not make a big impression. I'm sure others will remember more.

I seem to remember her dancing the lead in the single act version of La Bayadere partnered by Rudolph himself, in fact she danced this role 13 times.

I remember Lorrayne as a warm, feminine dancer - I was reminded of her more than once during the Kirov season whilst watching Veronika Part. She was one of the group of three excellent Lilac Fairies (the others being Mason and Deanne Bergsma) who all seemed to appear around the same time.

She created the role of Ysobel (the girl in the hammock) in Ashton's Enigma, and also the mournful Wednesday in his Jazz Calendar, and a little known duet called Siesta which he did for the touring company. She danced Aurora for both the RB companies.

She is on the video of Ashton's "Cinderella" as the Fairy of Summer if you want to see what she danced like. I was impressed when I saw it.
