"Email Virus"

Don't normally bother but this seems big...

Over the weekend I've got increasing numbers of virus infected email. There is wretched Virus going about that has you receiving an email asking for your thoughts on the attached word document - or sometimes it comes with a .pif, .bat or .com suffix. If it comes from somebody you know the subject of the email may even appear what you might expect - I suspect it re-uses some recent email subject headings they've chosen.

The text in the email seems to go something like this:

"Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks"

Just delete the lot soonest.

Funny that - I just received exactly what you describe. Fortunately, the file was an .lnk file so wouldn't open. I look on ballet.co two seconds later - and there's the answer to my question. The virus is called W32.Sircam.Worm@mm.

Somebody at work also received the Ethan virus at work today, so be warned if that "this document contains macros" sign comes up unexpectedly.

I got the virus yesterday - my first ever, and it was worrying. Fortunately, Brendan McCarthy very kindly helped me get rid of it this afternoon. Just don't open *any* attachments unless you are pretty sure who they came from! Also, if you have been 'infected' remember that after you have got rid of the virus you still have to delete the contents of your wastebasket (see Balletalert).

Er... and even then beware - the person you know might not have actually sent the email.

I've had another 12 copies roll-through the door today...

Thanks for the warning. I got it in Spanish (just to be different!) via my Hotmail account, the first time that's ever happened. I dread to think how many I've got sitting there at work. BTW, also look out for Snow White virus (various languages), which allegedly has a porn attachment and is from Hahaha.

I got one from her as well - in all I've had 87 of them including about 5 spanish ones! Most of them weigh in at about 200K as well - thank goodness I've got ADSL (I say when it works)

87, phew!! I've only had a few, but they keep overloading my hotmail mailbox pretty quickly, and I got a warning that I was over my limit and had to chuck some stuff out, or else. Hope your antivirus software's working properly, BRuce - can't wait to see what my Inbox will be like when I get back to work.

Yahoo gives you 6mB which I think is v good.

But teh main reasn I have an account with them is that it can also can be setup to go off to your normal pop server and grab all your 'normal' email - its how I pick up all my stuff when I'm away. So I but rarely use my Yahoo email address 'cos with such a setup I don't need peopel to knwo it - everybody can email my normal address no matter.

It must be virus season. I've been sent magistr.a twice in the past three weeks. Once from New York and once from The Hague. It's quite distructive. Be very careful with attachments.
