I find Dance Books very good. You can buy on line at http://www.dancebooks.co.uk/

You will have a choice of the Royal Ballet version with Dowell and Penny and the Australian Ballet. If you serach the archive on this site I think you will find reviews of both. Personally I prefer the Royal's .

Oh dear, it was up for sale on Ebay, less than a week ago. Ebay is a good place to look for ballet videos, I've bought two in the past month myself, though not Manon because I'm waiting to watch it live first. If I ever see it up for sale again, I'll leave a message on this board.

ebay is fatal - here are some pics of what I collect:

Note these are links to pictures that will disappear before long - so when at some future time they are not there you will just have to imagine what I collect!

   Liz -
I don't know where you are based, but there are several copies of the RB's'Manon' currently available in the ROH shop - at least there were on Saturday 16th. I think the RB's is the better version of the two available, if only because it has the original des Grieux - Anthony Dowell - dancing the role.

I ordered the other day - don't know how long it will take to actually arrive. I had ordered one from Amazon, but they were having trouble getting it.

Also Video Flicks has it - NTSC

LAST EDITED ON 18-06-01 AT 11:54 PM (GMT)

There's a RB Manon video on http://ebay.co.uk right now.

Q. Is the whole ebay thing quite reliable? I've been tempted to get something from time to time, but I worry I'll be ripped off.

First, in reply to what Bruce said - how true, Ebay is addictive!

Second, there's always the risk you'll be ripped off, get a defective product etc. But one of the greatest assets of Ebay is its feedback rating system, which allows you to assess the seller's reliability before bidding. Ebay also insures all purchases over $25 (US) and you can file fraud protection with SafeHarbour in case you meet an unscrupulous seller. I've never had to do this, so I'm not too sure how it works.

My advice would be to start small, nothing too expensive, buy from a seller with a good feedback rating and choose an option of payment that would allow your transaction to proceed smoothly. Don't bid without intending to follow through. Buyers also get feedback ratings so I'm sure you don't want to start off by chalking up negative ratings. Read the item description carefully and make sure there are no loopholes for the seller to send you a defective product. For example, my first buy off ebay was a video tape described in Almost Mint condition. When it arrived, the box was shelf worn and it looked like a good rental copy - definitely not Mint at first glance. Yet the picture was excellent for a tape made in 1980. But usually by reading the comments left by other buyers about a seller, you can gauge their strong points, eg item exactly as described, fast delivery, good packaging, no excessive shipping and handling charges and so on. Remember that shipping from US can be very expensive for anything that can't fit into a Global Priority Envelope!

Lastly, here's the link to the RB Manon - I see it is a nice new copy.

I saw a copy of Manon at the gigantic Borders book shop in Chicago yesterday so I assume that it is available at the better records shops in New York, Boston etc.

It is also available in England quite widely.

Sorry I am not sure where you live - it is in USA but in say Houston my info is quite useless probably!!
