"More DVD/video recommendations?"

I was wondering if anyone had purchased:

La Scala's Giselle, with Ferri
Pacific Northwest's Midsummer Night's Dream,
RB's Coppelia, with Benjamin + Acosta
RB's Judas Tree, with Benjamin + Mukhamedov

I'd love to hear your views - my ballet video/dvd puchases to date have been very hit and miss, but I find that reviews from others are usually very accurate.

Plus Still Life at the Penguin Cafe - who's cast in this? I can't seem to find out.

Thanks!!

The casting for the Still Life video is -

Utah Longhorn Ram - Deborah Bull
Ram Partner - Guy Niblett
Texan Kangaroo Rat - Bruce Sansom
Humboldt’s Hog Nosed Skunk Flea - Fiona Brockway
Southern Cape Zebra - Phillip Broomhead
Rain Forest People - Tracy Brown, Jonathan Cope, Michelle di Lorenzo
Brazilian Wooly Monkey - Stephen Jeffries
The Great Auk - Nicola Roberts
Girls - Angela DeMello, Viviana Durante, Sharon McGorian, Krystyna Parker,
Genesia Rosato, Gail Taphouse, Nicola Tranah, Rosalyn Whitten, Rachael Whitbread.
Boys - Anthony Bourne, Michael Nunn, Jonathan Burrows, Sergiu Pobereznic, Neil
Skidmore.

The Judas Tree is fantastic of course and seems to transfer very well to video -the camerawork conveys the mood of the work brilliantly. The video can be purhased as a double bill with Bintley’s Nutcracker Sweeties - sheer fun! Leticia Muller as the Arabesque Cookie is !

I was at Sadler’s Wells when the filming of PNB’s Midsummer Night’s Dream took place and thoroughly enjoyed the production & this is one DVD purchase I intend to make though it remains to be seen how well it has been captured. The filming of the RB’s Coppelia was a little jumpy I thought -certain sections shown unnecessarily close and others leaving you desperate for a zoom. In my opinion it is worth buying on DVD in spite of these reservations, Benjamin & Acosta are wonderful & there are some extras -the RB’s move back into the new ROH and a short biog of designer Osbert Lancaster.

Hope this helps! (please don't throw me from the Amphitheatre Bar if our opinions differ!)

Thanks Pete! Guess I'm gonna have to run out and buy them all now, save Giselle. Doesn't RB's Coppelia DVD allow you to zoom in? Anyway, promise I won't go as far as throwing you off the bar, though I may resort to pelting you with ballet videos (heavier than DVDs of course).

   >Southern Cape Zebra - Phillip Broomhead

The best ever!

Glad that it is coming back (to BRB) next season

>I was at Sadler’s Wells when
>the filming of PNB’s Midsummer
>Night’s Dream took place

Having just seen 'our' Dream a couple more times I have to say (dons crash helmet and prepares to duck behind wall and ) I still think Balanchine did better. The act 2 pdd is to die for. I did not however like the PNB designs - dreadfully horrid (I think I likened them to MFI but that gets us into another argument!)

I liked POB's Midsummer's Night Dream. It's definitely worth a watch, though as it's the only one I've seen, I can't comment on how it fares against other production. But I should think it's a good addition to your collection. Patricia Barker is wonderful as Titania, and so is Puck, whose name I can't remember.
RB's Coppelia is not one of my "classic" favourites like Giselle or R & J, but its fairly enjoyable. Leanne Benjamin really gets into the spirit of Swanhilda, even though she had to sub for Yoshida at the last minute. Acosta was absolutely the dumbest Frantz, with his huge charming goofy grin. You can practically see the flashbulbs going off above his head as he tries to climb up to Coppelia's window.

One video I do NOT recommend is the Kirov version of Swan Lake with Makhalina and Zelensky. It was technically perfect but it put me to sleep. Makhalina was the most distressed swan I've ever seen, she performed her fouttes as though she was trying to swim through stormy waters. Her Odile was bland, her Odette was worse, and I hated her arms - a swan with broken wings on top of everything else. Von Rothbart was uninspired and Zelensky looked permanently constipated. I'm sure others will disagree, but this version just isn't my idea of Swan Lake. But then again, I'm of the personal opinion that Swan Lake is only meant to be watched live, and its only because I live in a ballet-less area that I rely so heavily on videos.

"One video I do NOT recommend is the Kirov version of Swan Lake "

Ugh...too late sonia, I purchased it and completely regret it. I love Makhalina, and I thought she made a lovely Odile/Odette. But the rest of it was lousy, and Zelensky was just a cardboard cutout of a prince. I kept fast forwarding, and before you knew it, the end.

(Actually, these are all comments from when I saw them on TV, but sure they'll help anyway):

I saw the Giselle on holiday, and fell asleep during it. Not sure whether that's a reflection on the quality or not ...

PNB's MND is rather lurid. To my mind the first act lacks the sublety, humour and succinctness of Ashton's version, although I did like the second act.

Coppelia looked rather better on TV than from my view from the amphitheatre. Not my favourite production, but I thought it was generally good. (Have you thought about Australian Ballet's version? Haven't seen the video, but the production impressed me enormously when they brought it over nearly a decade ago).

Judas Tree I thought worked exceptionally well - one of those rare ballets, like Swansong, that's even more effective on TV than live. Odd having it paired with Nutcracker Sweeties, though.

Was it worth it Tony? I loved seeing it in Feb and I thought about buying it, but I have Stiefel and Wildor etched so indelibly on my mind, I think I'm gonna have a hard time watching anyone else now.

BTW, thanks for all the recommendations!

Forgot to mention, someone on Ebay is selling RB's Manon with Dowell and Jennifer Penny. I think it is the only recorded version of Manon around, or at least I haven't seen any more. My friend has assured me that it's an excellent production and both the leads are absolutely lovely in it. I would be bidding on it myself except that I refuse to watch Manon over video until I see it live. It's going quite cheaply and the seller ships internationally.

I have all the videos mentioned above - I would not recommend Ferri's Giselle. The dancing standard is not good and production is lifeless. Go for Fracci's ABT production althought this has some annoying camera angles.

The Australian Ballet production of Coppelia has the edge on the RB version - better production and Pavanne is preferable to Benjamin in my view.

PNB MSND is a fine production if rather over the top in design.

Judas Tree and Nutcracker suite is a must in my view! Two great ballets extremely well dance (esp Benjamin and Mukahemdev in Judas Tree - it is a wiered ballet but with some powerufull choreography by Macmillan)

The RB La Fille Mal Gardee is one of the greatest performances captured by film - Collier's performance is stunning!

Has anyone seen the Australian Ballet's Fille DVD or video? I wondered whether it might be worth buying as my first DVD. No point in buying the things I've already got on video, though I'm sure some would disagree.

I bought the RB Coppelia a while ago on DVD it is fantastic, well recommended ! if however you are still into videos and you can get hold of it , get the RB The Sleeping Beauty.. the one where Dowell plays Carabosse. I will never look at that role again in the same light!! it is so much better when a man plays it..or maybe it's just Dowells performance ( i think thats it ). When he attacks Cattalabutte ( David Drew )for forgetting to be invited to the christening ... you really feel for the guy , you feel like shouting at the screen "leave him alone"!
I have just bought a VCR that can take PAL and NSTC ( the US ones ) so i will be able to get Swan Lake with Dowell and Makarova..along with many others we can't get here !
