"Anthony Dowell Gala"

Is anyone planning to get excited about last night's gala? I can't believe it's 12 noon and no-one's mentioned it! Apart from all the luvvie-ness, it was fabulous, and the Manon excerpt with the ever lovely Jonathan Cope and the FAR TOO SKINNY Viviana Durante was just mind-blowing. I've never seen anything like it.Wish he would throw ME around like that!! Wow!!

Hi, Cathryn. I've been getting excited about the gala all on my own. It was wonderful, wasn't it? And talking of throwing around, what about the way Roberto Bolle threw Leanne Benjamin up in the air? Stupendous.

I'd be excited if I'd been there! Please will you or somebody else give us more details? I read that Anthony D. and Sibley danced together? What did they dance, anybody, and what was it like? And the rest? I'd love to know!

As gala go this was a goodie! Sadly the gala was clearly not televised. I saw no cameras or the BBC truck outside. Given that they televised Queen of Spades (deservedly so - highlight of the ROH season) just a few days ago they ought to do this one as well.

Great to see Viviana Durante in two pdd - Giselle and Manon!

You missed a wonderful show, Helen. I think the Dowell/Sibley pdd was called 'Soupir' by Ashton, to music by Elgar. But forgive me if I'm wrong - it was a carefully kept secret, not even in the programme. No energetic throwing around and some of the lifts looked quite strained, but it was certainly a privilege to see two legends dancing together for the last (?) time. Everyone who went will have different favourite items, but for me the highlights were this surprise duet, Bolle and Benjamin in the Thais pdd, Carlos Acosta and Tamara Rojo in the Don Quixote pdd and Viviana Durante returning in extracts from (I believe) her two greatest roles - Manon and Giselle.

Completely agree - thought this was so moving and beautifully danced! My favourite without doubt on the night!

The last two galas I have been to have been so well though out and if nothing else they should invite Anthony back to oversee the next one!

Hate to lower the tone, but I'd never seen Roberto Bolle before and was gobsmacked by how HUGE he is!! Meow!!! Between him, Jonathan Cope and Carlos Acosta, I was fainting away regularly.

Being more constructive and adult about it, my fave bits were the Thais duet as well, AND the Don Quixote number and of course the Manon excerpt. My only disappointment was that Alina Cojocaru only got that tiny dance, which I thought was slightly dull, and the world's most HIDEOUS costume!! Poor thing. I would have been gutted if that was me!!

Was he?
As far as I remember Bolle had a perfect figure last year in Swan Lake and the Nutcracker. Things can change over months!

Oh dear..what did she dance in?
Could you please describe more in details?

He wasn't fat huge - just big boned compared to all the more neatly built male dancers. He was marvellous.

Alina did a month in the country, i think. I know very little about ballet, so can't say a lot about it, but i'm a huge fan of hers, and was just disappointed what she got to do.

Last night's documentary showed a bit of the rehearsal for the Sibley/Dowell ppd.
It's called 'Le Soupir' and was made by Ashton for a gala for Anthony Dowell 20 years ago.
Sibley told the story of having retired and being asked to come back to dance at that Gala. She said she would come and read poetry ! Aston then made a piece based on a poem for them both.
Aparently last time round they had Edwardian costumes and wigs, and some of the lifts were altered slightly this time.
Doesn't Antoinette Sibley still look wonderful ?

Could someone PLEASE tell us what the programme consisted of? I'm dying to know! I know it would take time to write out the whole programme, but I'm sure there are many people, like myself, who were unlucky with a ticket, and would love to know!

Varii Capriccii was advertised - did this happen? Mukhamedov would seem to be a natural for the gigolo pdd in this - or what did he do?

Those of you who attended - more details please?!

How was the front of house decorated - as gorgeous as Madam's 90th birthday gala in 1988?

The piece which Wildor and Cooper did was from Varii Capricci. The Royal Ballet School boys opened the programme in a very emotional piece, showing little boys growing up to become young dancers. The Royal Ballet School also did a piece called 'Souvenir(s?)' by Christopher Wheeldon (though I believe it's called something else elsewhere) which was quite attractive. The central section had a clever idea where a girl starts off dancing with three male partners and more and more keep arriving on stage till eventually there are about nine.

What was Ethan Stiefel like? Since I saw him in La Fille, I've been such a huge fan.

Also, where was the programme actually advertised? I've been looking everywhere for news about the gala for the last few months and I didn't have a clue what was going to be danced until now.

It wasn't published in advance as far as I was aware - we only knew what was being danced we bought the programme.

I didn't know what would be danced until I bought my programme.

And speaking of programmes - have any of you read yours yet? What did you think of Sylvie's piece? (I thought it rather interesting.)

Bruce - do you think we'd be allowed to quote from the programme (and if so, how much?) without infringing copyright? I think people might be interested in some of the comments.

Yes I would agree with that but was Irek in the gala ? I am still green with envy. I would loved to have seen Viv as she is one of my favourite ballerinas and I have missed her presence at the Royal ballet. I think it is so bad that the BBC did not make a video recording of the gala. Does anyone know if Durante plans to dance in London this year ? Will we ever see Irek and Viv together again ?

I *think* that Irek is choreographing for a company. Which, I can't say. When, I don't remember, but I know the premiere is pretty soon. Maybe that has something to do with it.

It is kinda wierd though that he didn't perform.

Souvenirs was a lovely idea but surely they could have mustered a more expressive and lyrical bunch of female dancers. One or two didnt seem to have a clue about musicality or phrasing!

Cojararu did dance Vera's pdd, and I have to say she had the same look on her face as she did when I saw her dance Clara and Giselle.

I thought Stiefel was stunning, dare I say it but better than Kobborg the other night. He had that fey, other worldly look about him that I felt Kobborg lacked, well as he got his feet around it.
