"Anthony Dowell Gala"

Is anyone planning to get excited about last night's gala? I can't believe it's 12 noon and no-one's mentioned it! Apart from all the luvvie-ness, it was fabulous, and the Manon excerpt with the ever lovely Jonathan Cope and the FAR TOO SKINNY Viviana Durante was just mind-blowing. I've never seen anything like it.Wish he would throw ME around like that!! Wow!!

Hi, Cathryn. I've been getting excited about the gala all on my own. It was wonderful, wasn't it? And talking of throwing around, what about the way Roberto Bolle threw Leanne Benjamin up in the air? Stupendous.

I'd be excited if I'd been there! Please will you or somebody else give us more details? I read that Anthony D. and Sibley danced together? What did they dance, anybody, and what was it like? And the rest? I'd love to know!

As gala go this was a goodie! Sadly the gala was clearly not televised. I saw no cameras or the BBC truck outside. Given that they televised Queen of Spades (deservedly so - highlight of the ROH season) just a few days ago they ought to do this one as well.

Great to see Viviana Durante in two pdd - Giselle and Manon!

You missed a wonderful show, Helen. I think the Dowell/Sibley pdd was called 'Soupir' by Ashton, to music by Elgar. But forgive me if I'm wrong - it was a carefully kept secret, not even in the programme. No energetic throwing around and some of the lifts looked quite strained, but it was certainly a privilege to see two legends dancing together for the last (?) time. Everyone who went will have different favourite items, but for me the highlights were this surprise duet, Bolle and Benjamin in the Thais pdd, Carlos Acosta and Tamara Rojo in the Don Quixote pdd and Viviana Durante returning in extracts from (I believe) her two greatest roles - Manon and Giselle.

Completely agree - thought this was so moving and beautifully danced! My favourite without doubt on the night!

The last two galas I have been to have been so well though out and if nothing else they should invite Anthony back to oversee the next one!

Hate to lower the tone, but I'd never seen Roberto Bolle before and was gobsmacked by how HUGE he is!! Meow!!! Between him, Jonathan Cope and Carlos Acosta, I was fainting away regularly.

Being more constructive and adult about it, my fave bits were the Thais duet as well, AND the Don Quixote number and of course the Manon excerpt. My only disappointment was that Alina Cojocaru only got that tiny dance, which I thought was slightly dull, and the world's most HIDEOUS costume!! Poor thing. I would have been gutted if that was me!!

He wasn't fat huge - just big boned compared to all the more neatly built male dancers. He was marvellous.

Alina did a month in the country, i think. I know very little about ballet, so can't say a lot about it, but i'm a huge fan of hers, and was just disappointed what she got to do.

Last night's documentary showed a bit of the rehearsal for the Sibley/Dowell ppd.
It's called 'Le Soupir' and was made by Ashton for a gala for Anthony Dowell 20 years ago.
Sibley told the story of having retired and being asked to come back to dance at that Gala. She said she would come and read poetry ! Aston then made a piece based on a poem for them both.
Aparently last time round they had Edwardian costumes and wigs, and some of the lifts were altered slightly this time.
Doesn't Antoinette Sibley still look wonderful ?

Varii Capriccii was advertised - did this happen? Mukhamedov would seem to be a natural for the gigolo pdd in this - or what did he do?

Those of you who attended - more details please?!

How was the front of house decorated - as gorgeous as Madam's 90th birthday gala in 1988?

The piece which Wildor and Cooper did was from Varii Capricci. The Royal Ballet School boys opened the programme in a very emotional piece, showing little boys growing up to become young dancers. The Royal Ballet School also did a piece called 'Souvenir(s?)' by Christopher Wheeldon (though I believe it's called something else elsewhere) which was quite attractive. The central section had a clever idea where a girl starts off dancing with three male partners and more and more keep arriving on stage till eventually there are about nine.

What was Ethan Stiefel like? Since I saw him in La Fille, I've been such a huge fan.

Also, where was the programme actually advertised? I've been looking everywhere for news about the gala for the last few months and I didn't have a clue what was going to be danced until now.

And speaking of programmes - have any of you read yours yet? What did you think of Sylvie's piece? (I thought it rather interesting.)

Bruce - do you think we'd be allowed to quote from the programme (and if so, how much?) without infringing copyright? I think people might be interested in some of the comments.

Yes I would agree with that but was Irek in the gala ? I am still green with envy. I would loved to have seen Viv as she is one of my favourite ballerinas and I have missed her presence at the Royal ballet. I think it is so bad that the BBC did not make a video recording of the gala. Does anyone know if Durante plans to dance in London this year ? Will we ever see Irek and Viv together again ?

Cojararu did dance Vera's pdd, and I have to say she had the same look on her face as she did when I saw her dance Clara and Giselle.

I thought Stiefel was stunning, dare I say it but better than Kobborg the other night. He had that fey, other worldly look about him that I felt Kobborg lacked, well as he got his feet around it.

Let ME tell you how amazing he was. He was mindblowing. He came on and did this excerpt from Manon, which I've never seen, and he was just so sensual and gorgeous and strong and passionate that it literally took my breath away. He kind of threw her around and caught her in amazing positions, and it was stunning. At the end, when she dies, he was just heart-breaking. The whole place erupted, and it was an amazing moment.
He danced with Alina in the second half, in this SHOCKING pyjama-type outfit, and that kind of spoiled it for me, but he's just so foot-perfect and amazing that you just watch in awe.
The boy's a genius!!

I saw Jonathan Cope dance one full performance of Manon with Durante last year, but I think his performance of the final pas de deux with her at the gala was on a whole new level. It was a shame not to see Irek Mukhamedov dance it with her (like many people, I got used to that pairing and nothing else will ever be quite the same) but I'm not going to let the fact that he wasn't there stop me enjoying Durante's or Cope's wonderful performance. Cathryn really says it all above. Durante and Cope never danced together much but it looked like the experience of doing this intense scene together brought out new dramatic depths in him.

I'm still wondering why Kumakawa was invited to dance twice last night. I initially thought he would dance as Viviana's partner, but he was also one of the leading male dancers in the final piece, Symphony in C partnering Benjamin. Couldn't Dowell find anybody else within the company ? If Kumakawa could dance for his Gala, how about Cassidy, Trevitt and Nunn ? It would have been wonderful to see them too !!

Kumakawa danced that role with Benjamin when he was still with the Company, Tomoko. His performance in the third movement of Symphony in C (only the fourth was performed on Wednesday as the finale to the evening) was one of the most breathtaking things I can remember him doing. It would have been nice to see some of those other dancers too but I suppose you can't have everything and who knows, paerhaps they were asked but unavailable. I thought the line up for Symphony in C was very strong - particularly Zanowsky, whom I'd never seen in that role before (I can only remember Bussell in the second movement). It would be great to see Zanowsky in more Balanchine, particularly Rubies.

I'm only guessing Ann, but it may have been something to do with rights. Perhaps certain choreographers or their estates wouldn't let their works be filmed without rigorous restrictions, prohibitively high fees (not a good idea for a fund raiser) or in short extracts. Perhaps certain dancers had already granted other companies exclusive rights to film them in certain roles. Perhaps simply the logisitcs of checking all this proved too much in the short time available. Perhaps it's none of the above and it was simply that no one asked or suggested it. You could ask Tony Hall at the Royal Opera House, I suppose, or Dame Vivien Duffield or Lady Sainsbury. But it's too late now to do anything about it.

I have to say that I was surprised to hear that Kumakawa was in it at all. What with Cassidy appearing with the company in the States, can we hope that everyone's decided to let bygones be bygones? I do hope so.

Would this archive material ever become available for public transmission if enough people indicated an interest ?

LAST EDITED ON 25-05-01 AT 04:02 PM (GMT)

A friend of mine also attended the dinner after the performance, having paid 750 pounds. The tables in the Floral Hall were completely reserved for corporate entertainement by a bank. Most of the guests dined on the level of the Amphitheatre restaurant, including Dowell himself. My friend happened to be seated at the same table as David Bintley. Apparently the RB principals who participated in the gala came to the dinner as well, but were seated at different tables.

Did anyone noticed some blue Tutus around selling programmes and asking for the donations? Only the skinny ones were specially chosen for this event, no pay only a free programme-I suppose they are 10 pounds each!! It was rather disgusting the way they were told to plead for money for the school wearing almost nothing and old men looking at the pink tights.

I was wondering how Teddy did in the Giselle pdd. I haven't seen him dance much and I've read that his partnering needs a little work. How was he in this? Is Albrecht a role he's done before?

Yes, Teddy has done Albrecht outside RB quite often. He performed it as a guest artist at the Bolshoi and also did this role with many Japanese companies. He did say that this is one of his favorite ballets and that one of the (little) reasons why he left the RB was because he was never given the chance to do these danseur noble roles.

I saw these girls - as far as I could see, there were only girls, I suppose all the boys were backstage preparing for the first piece on the programme. I don't know anything at all about the circumstances, but if you have any serious allegations of child abuse I think you should contact the NSPCC or Childline.

I think "disgusting" is a bit strong - especially as they were volunteers.

I certainly was not looking under their skirts and I doubt anyone else was!!

But I think they look great and it probably induced me to buy a program which is exact what is suppose to happen!

Have only just returned from London.

For my own part, I feel incredibly privilidged to have attended the performance (Balcony, side, stage right)to have said farewell to Sir Anthony.

Manon and Don Q were rightly show stoppers - partly because of their placing within the programme as well as the dancing. Manon is, I believe, Mr Cope's signature piece, in which he can find an emotional connection which sometimes eludes him in other parts. Carlos Acosta is rightly famed for his Basilio and Tamara Rojo injected genuine fire into her performance also. The Giselle pdd was good, but I fear that a personal antipathy towards TK will have affected my appreciation. I'm afraid that I still find him a facially uninvolved partner - despite his fine skills. Sorry.

As an inexperienced ballet fan, however, I found the quieter, understated items had the most impact - Swan Lake pdd with Miyako Yoshida and Johan Kobborg, Varii Capricii with Sara Wildor and Adam Cooper and in particular, the Thais pdd with Leanne Benjamin and Roberto Bolle - it's surely a matter of continued regret, that we don't see more of Roberto. I find him a fine dancer and most attentive partner.

The Highlight of course must have been the reprise of Soupirs by Sir A himself and Antoinette Sibley. Following an off-stage introduction the piece seemed to transport the House back to former times, summing up his/their career(s)in a genuine moment of reverie. Utterly affecting.

The press have made some interesting comments, and I think that on reflection, the evening was rightly a review of Sir Anthony's dancing career.

I think Sir Anthony's talent as Director have been particularly strong on maintenance rather than overt innovation and new direction. I also feel he's had a particular facility for attracting new talent to the company. We must surely acknowledge his efforts to keep the company together and bring it so successfully into the new house. There now seems a real buzz about the place. Once the dust has settled and time has placed a distance, I'm sure more considered views will emerge. I, for one, hope that someone (perhaps Sir Anthony?) will write a book on the era.

No doubt people will disagree, but that's what the site is here for!
