"Gala broadcast??"

Is the gala on the 23rd being broadcast? Anyone have plans to tape it? I would certainly love to see this but jetting to England is somewhat out of the question tomorrow. If someone does tape it I would be willing to pay for a copy.

thanks so much,

lara

I'm afraid the gala's not being broadcast, as far anyone can tell. BBC said some time ago that there were no plans to film it. Sorry about that. I'm pretty desolate myself.

Just wondering, is does any tape-trading go on in the UK? - seems to work out quite well over in the US. There are lots of tv specials/galas that I've never seen (haven't had access to a tv in about 4 years) that I'd gladly pay for.

   Lara & Sylvia,

Great link to 'Classical Ballet in Europe' - thanks!

We do have a wierd PAL (not NTSC or SECAM) system in the UK (which I believe is the same as Japan) which makes compatabilty an issue.

But a tape-trading site or link is great idea -the only issue is the old one of copyright.

Thanks for the link Lara! I've sent you an email.

Regarding the website, the list of tapes seems to be rooted from the 60s to the early 90s, and is pretty impressive! The names of the ballet are in Italian (I think), which makes translating some of them a little hard. What for example is SCHIACCIANOCI? (starring Kirkland and Barishnikov, I'm guessing Nutcracker, but I can't be sure )

Pete, how does the system in the UK work? How do I get started?

tape format differences are not nearly the problem they used to be. There are places where one can have PAL tapes converted to NTSC frequencies and vice versa.

There are also TV's that can receive multi-frequencies so an inexpensive PAL VCR can be used....but one has to have the right televsion. I am speaking of in the states.

The other alternative which I am seriously considering - is to buy a VCR that can read and convert worldwide signals. Samsung makes one at about $450 US and Aiwa makes a really nice one for $499 American. I just have to figure out if the number of foreign tapes I want to watch justifies that kind of expense.

Pondering I am.

I get the sense the idea of tape trading is for stuff you tape yourself off of a televsion broadcast and you are using it for personal use only - not selling or charging admission. Of course the copyright issue on commercial tapes is valid and not such a good idea.

Sylvia, where do you live?

Lara, I'm a uni student in the UK, but I'm from Hong Kong. My video player in HK probably supports both PAL and NTSC, which is wonderful except for the fact that it's on the other side of the earth!

Your interpretation of tape-trading is the same as mine - under those circumstances, I shouldn't think there would be a problem with copyright.
