"Adam Cooper - now what?"

hello, I am new to this board so a quick introduction. I am a professional photographer in Southern California with a long love of the ballet.

After seeing Billing Elliott I bought the DVD of Bourne's Swan Lake and was very impressed with the work of Adam Cooper.

I read with interest the wonderful review of his work at The Clore.

So what will he be doing now? Is he freelance or has he gone back to the Royal Ballet?

thanks so much in advance,

Lara

Adam is remarkably shy about his projects. He is still freelance and as far as anybody knows he is billed to take part in the Farewell gala performance for Anthony Dowell at the ROH on 23rd May. Other publicity suggests he will be guesting for one or two performances with the RB on their US tour at Boston, Mass., doing the Thais pdd with Leanne Benjamin. The only other project (so far as we know) is of one choreographed by himself in the autumn (a collaboration with designer Lez Brotherston and the composer Philip Feeney) which is entirely mysterious. This is all guesswork. I do wish someone would set up a Cooper site!!

thanks so much for the info!

I have actually thought about setting up a site for him - just not sure how to actually go about it. I have a domain name and space and a web guy that can put the finishing touches on my design.

Do you think there is much interest in a site for Cooper? Do you think he would cooperate or support a site like with information and photos and such?

wish I could be in England on the 23rd of May ... maybe Boston would be closer.

The last time I mentioned web sites to Adam he said he was in the process of setting one up and had talked to a couple of people! Not sure how far he has actually got though!

I think a site about Adam Cooper would be nice and I do know quite a lot of people who would be interested. Maybe Lara is the right person to give it a try.

It is amazing what one can find on a Yahoo search - like a bazillion pages mentioning Cooper - I am on #53.

This was an interesting mention I thought with a date of 2001:

>>At the moment (composer) Philip (feeney) is musical director for Ballet Central?s 2001 UK National Tour, for which he has written the music for three ballets, including Sara Matthews? Going South for the Winter, which is scored for piano and cathedral organ. He is currently working on Northern Ballet Theatre?s new production of Streetcar named Desire, to be choreographed by Didy Veldman, and is simultaneously collaborating with dancer and choreographer, Adam Cooper, on a new production of Les Liasons Dangereueses.<<

Also a mention of ballet audtions with Cooper as Boy's Director on another site. too many pages to read in one sitting I think.

According to the Kennedy Center's website, he'll be performing "Thais" with Benjamin there in June. (Washington DC)

Unfortunately, I won't be getting to see him, but I do have tickets to see Ethan Stiefel guesting with the RB that weekend, in "La Fille mal gardee". It was a tough choice, but it's easier for us to make the 5 hour drive on a weekend, and Adam is scheduled for the weeknights.

Good luck with the web site!

There are a lot of people here who would like a Cooper website but who have had a bit of difficulty in getting Adam to agree. I guess he is not much interested in technology

I wonder why it is there aren't more websites on ballet dancers than there already are. The few I've seen are not surprisingly devoted to Darcey and Sylvie Guillem, and they mostly a few pictures pasted on the web, with some links and reviews, but haven't been updated in ages.

Perhaps you shoud check out some of the links on Bruce's page that he has on dancers web sites - there seem to be quite a few out there and some are actually updated on a regular basis!

Re: a website for Adam: I have written to his agent twice asking for permission to set up a professional-diary-style website for Adam, as there seems to be such a demand for one, and have also tried to talk to Adam himself about it, all unsuccessfully so far. I don't really mind who sets one up, so long as someone manages to let everyone know where they can see him in performance, but it's proving to be very hard for anyone to make any progress.

What does a >>professional-diary-style website<< entail? I wonder if he thinks it means he has to do a lot of work on it????

I sorta thought maybe a site that had an occasional interview with him, with pics from his performances or rehearsals or whatever and his schedule. Something he wouldn't have to put any effort into except to talk to a writer for the stories.

How does that fit it with your concept? It is super to see that someone else has the same idea and is further along the path. Now if someone that knows him can just convince him that a website is a GOOD idea - for his growing number of fans - and it is a good career move...a very good career move.

I would be willing to help you in whatever way I can - just let me know. I write and shoot ( photos) so maybe I can be of some assistance...even from California.

   >What does a >>professional-diary-style website<< entail?

All I meant by that particular expression was that I was offering to do a website that basically contained his performance schedule, plus possibly the odd interview with him, which I was intending to ask my friend Jenny to do, as she's a journalist (and indeed has done some of the interviews for this site). I didn't want to do any more than that, mainly because as other people have said, getting permission for the use of pictures can be difficult, and I also wanted to do a very simple, quick to load-and-view site for information only, rather than a fan-type site.

I just hope Shirley is right about him contacting someone to do one for him professionally, as we might get something on line soon (?)

When I asked Adam about web sites a couple of weeks ago he did say that he had spoken to someone about setting one up and the way he spoke it was as thpough it was a professional company as he also mentioned that a couple of fans had offered to do one!

He may be further on now but I suppose rehearsals take up so much time that he may not!

Ugh believe me, I have combed each and every ballet website there is on the internet, and apart from the forums, they're not terrible satisfactory. The Nina Ananiashvili site is pretty nice, and so is Darcey Bussell's. Apart from those, I can't think of any others I'd visit on a regular basis.

I love collecting pics of ballet stars and pasting them all over my desktop but there isn't much in the way of quality pics. I'm the biggest fan of Angel Corella, but I can't find many decent pictures or info on him(nice to read the interview with him on here though). I wish RB would put up more publicity shots on a regular basis. The poster of Sarah Wildor for Ondine was so beautiful, I wish they'd released more.

There is a big problem with pictures - some photographers do not allow you to use them on web sites at all and others charge so much it is a financial strain to put them up!

There is a lot, a whole lot that I am not familiar with in the current ballet world. So please forgive my ignorance, but you wrote

Thais is...?? And Benjamin is...???

Thais pas de deux with Leanne Benjamin, same thing Veronica was talking about when she said he'd be performing in Boston.

As for other dancers who have websites, there's www.robertobolle.com (an interview, news that hasn't been updated in a long time, and some absolutely gorgeous photos.)

I've thought of doing a web page about Anthony Dowell, but the main problem is finding photos and getting permission to use them. I wasn't thinking of doing anything 'official', more of a fan appreciation site.

He is appearing at the Exeter Festival with Sarah Wildor and others, I cannot remember. I am looking forward to seeing them on July 7th. Rather a long way from California I am afraid.
I saw him in the upstairs bar at Covent Garden the other day with I think Lez Brotherton. He was probably there to see Mrs Cooper dancing rather well in The Concert.

A developing thread, but not sure if anybody has suggested doing a search of postings, which would throw up more stuff... like the site about him. This does not seem to have made into our links database - we ask/allow other website folks to add links them themselves, using their own words etc. As I recall the site was in its infancy and it would be true to say that we probably had (have still I suspect) more 'news' here than anywhere. Its just not always hard news! Adam did however post about a project on these pages...

Reading these threads has prompted me to add in details of Nicolas Le Riche's website to the links pages. I've also added POB contacts-could these go into the Primary Links Bruce as we have a lot of interest here in the Paris scene. It's a real thrill when favourite dancers get a site- I'd asked Nicolas about his a number of times and there it now is. Quite arty and obscure in parts but with a great downloadable picture if you complete a puzzle. It also has a performance calendar which is updated.
