"Recommendations for ballet videos?"

   Hiya

I was wondering if anyone has seen the RB video of Manon with Dowell and Sibley, or the Australian version. I can't make up my mind which to get, and was hoping someone would make the distinctions between them.

Also, I LOVE the video recommendation section here. I found them a great help, and I hope they'll continue to be added to.

Thanks

The both version are really fine danced, but for the historical interest I think the Royal ballet with Dowell, Penney, Wall and Mason is really good. It's till the roles creators. We feel the MacMillan touch in Royal Ballet what it's absolutely normal. I especially enjoyed their pdd and I love Wall acting as well as Mason. Dowell is Des Grieux as Legris was Des Grieux in France performance. And I find marvellous the three gentlemen dance.
More the Royal ballet version is dancing in the Georgiadis set and costums, it's not the case of Australian ballet.

In a nutshell, the Royal version is better danced ('though the Australian version is very commendable); the picture and sound quality of the Australian version are far superior.

If you're into DVDs it might be worth waiting to see if the RB version appears in this format: the quality of the recent DVD issue of the old RB Fille is far superior to the video.

Hope this helps!

I should have sent until, rather than if: I talked to Warner Vision last week and they tell me that all their existing dance videos will at some stage appear on DVD. No dates yet, I'm afraid.

AS the main contributor to the video section I must thank you for the complement.

I liked both Manon. I suppose the RB version is better theatrically and the dancers are more experienced in these roles- but the powerful and more up to date Australian dancing is worth seeing as well!

Regarding the release of Warner's collection of ballet videos- La Fille with Leslie Collier has been released. If you have a DVD then you must get this - it is one of the greatest performances to be captured on video!!

Thanks for the comments. I'll probably go for the RB version. I sure do wish RB would release more videos with the current company.
