   Comments on casting

I think Helgi Tomasson had some hard choices to make regarding casting, and not all the talents of the company are going to be seen to great advantage. I would guess he will make up for the lacks in London and Spain.

Many of these dancers should be slightly familiar to European audiences. Nedviguine, for example, and Boada, were members of Le Jeune Ballet de France and Gonzalo Garcia won the Prix de Lausanne three or four years ago. From the looks of it, he may well be announced as a new principal in July, replacing the retiring Christopher Stowell.

I wish Muriel Maffre had a more central role and that Pierre Francois Vilanoba was dancing more than the one Othello. He did a very impressive debut in the role. Lucia LaCarra is making her debut in Paris as Desdemonda and should be an effective one. Katita Waldo was very good as I remember her and will complement Vilanoba well.

The word is going around that Joanna Berman will retire at the end of the spring season 2002. The Chaconne complements her warmth and she does it well with Possokhov. I've not seen her dance it with Rykine, who's not getting much opportunity in Paris.

I truly wish I could witness the company, and particularly see how they adjust to the rake and the size of the Opera stage. But
a number of them have danced in Russia, so perhaps they are somewhat acclimatized to that particular difference in stage construction.

Thanks so lot for the cast. I'm happy to discover all the principal. The next time Isaw Sabine Allemann, Elisabeth Loscavio, Joanna Berman in Rodeo. It was two mixed bill one with Rodeo, Morris'Maelstrom, Bugaku and one other with Morris Quatro stagioni, Nanna's Lieder (I really enjoyed it) and Who cares ?
I think this time we must discover more specific new american work we never saw in France. We know naturly Morris and Thomasson work, we have one Lubovich at repertory but I don't remember the title, it was a very short piece for five dancers.
I'm happy to see Lacarra I enjoyed her with Marseille ballet, she dance in the Guepard, the young girl role. I saw Cyril Pierre in the same company in Petit's Belle au bois dormant. I never saw live Boada, I know his talent, I saw more broadcast programm where he danced repertory pdd as Corsaire and so on. I think they can cast a few more Vilanoba as he was in his first dance House, but I'm glad to see him in a big role as Othello, he was really promising when he was at POB, without competition, he would be a premier danseur now. But POB is hard to live.
I saw Katita Waldo next time in Who Cares as well as Muriel Maffre as Bugaku. I know they re managing well POB's rake. I find it was a very beautiful company. I saw one time before with the beautiful version of Thomasson Swan Lake. How I said on an other website. I don't know if somewhere SFB is not best than ABT troup.

Renee, thanks a lot! I'm going to see the SFB on May 13, and am looking forward to attending the performance! As Catherine, I had seen them in 1994, and had enjoyed the performances a lot. Catherine, I think you made a small mistake: Quatro Stagioni was in the same program as Bugaku and Rodeo (that's the one I had seen) and it was by Tomasson, not Morris. Maelstrom was in the other program.

It's great to have such an exchange between San Francisco and Paris- I hope that it will be organized again in future seasons...
