OK, that's two votes for John Carewe as a conductor and one against. Any ballet.co opinions? (Meisner was very scathing, Craine and (I think) Mackrell glowing!)

Well, I *did* think he was taking the "overture" for Firebird pretty slowly on the first night, but thought there was a lot of colour there. I shall have to go back for another listen - I don't usually pay too much attention to the music when I'm watching ballet, although I do admit to letting out an audible wince (if you see what I mean) when someone played a particularly duff note.

Thanks for this fascinating link, Brendan. Accocella is a bit hard on Hodson and Archer, I think, especially in the light of Deborah Bull's piece in last Saturday's Telegraph 'Stepping Back into a Scandal' describing her experiences dancing H&A's reconstructed 'Rite of Spring' in Rome recently. The piece was received 'ecstatically' by the Rome audience, apparently, and, referring to the questionable authenticity of Hodson's reconstruction, Bull says the real question for her is if so many highly intelligent and knowledgeable individuals - dancers, choreographers, writers etc. - regard it as a great piece of dance, what does this make of Hodson?

You can find Deborah Bull's article on her website:

I have just read Lydia Sokolova's article written in 1935 about being in the first production of 'Le Sacre' and the later Production by Massine it is in 'Footnotes to the Ballet'edited by Caryl Brahms. I am sure dance books will have several copies fairly cheaply. It confirms the difficulties of the part and is suprisingly similar to Deborah Bull's account.

t is not a new idea to invite modern-dance choreographers into ballet companies. But unusually, all three new works for American Ballet Theater this season are by modern dancers.
