"Stravinsky Staged bill televised"

Last night's performances of Firebird (Leanne Benjamin, back from injury and pushing herself almost beyond her body's limits - I don't think I've ever seen her do such a strong, wild Firebird) and Les Noces were being filmed, I hope for the BBC. They didn't film Agon, which was probably just as well, since I found it rather disappointing: Acosta looked a bit rough, and he and Zenaida Yanowsky didn't seem to create a rapport during their duet. The only one of the men who looked comfortable, and seemed to have that "edge" (and the hip movements) you need for Balanchine, was (possibly surprisingly, as I can't tell from his biography how much Balanchine he's done?) Johan Kobborg.

Alison, I agree with you , Bejamin was the best Firebird I have seen in a long time, she took my breathe away, WONDERFUL, AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, WHAT A MARVELLOUS PERFOMER SHE IS.
Agon Yanowsky, was ill suited for the part, both her and Acosta looked ill at ease, not comfortable with the choreography,as you pointed out ragged, were as Kobborg was marvellous, I found Tapper also more Balanchine then the other girls.
Les Noches I felt Yanowsky fared beter in this piece, the corps were exellent.
In all a very enjoyable evening.
Does anyone know when the program is going out on telivision?

When I saw Benjamin's Firebird last year I was absolutely astounded -she dances the role so wonderfully it truly was breathtaking stuff. I have seen a few other dancers perform the role but no-one comes close to her perfect interpretation -WOW!

At least the gloom of the tube strike will melt away for a short while when I see her next Wednesday -Can't wait!

They were filming today too, and they definitely filmed 'Agon'. 'Stravinsky Staged' was reviewed on tonight's 'Front Row' (Radio 4)and the presenter said that the programme had been recorded for future transmission by the BBC.

So that's good news.

I was at Amphi, so I didn't see the camera. Ann, were they filming "The Firebird" as well ? Jonathan Cope was in it although Nigel Burley was on the casting sheet. There was no announcement about the cast change. I found it very strange. Havind read Ann's posting, I now think they probably wanted to film Benjamin and Cope together.

I heard that Nigel is injured - this was after the show! Also they didn't film Agon this afternoon or the first two tonight ( I left early) so I wonder just what and who they are planning to show when it reaches TV?

LAST EDITED ON 28-04-01 AT 10:52 PM (GMT)

Apparently the reason why they didn't film Agon was something to do with the Balanchine Trust.

So was it really Jonathan Cope who danced in place of Nigel Burley in Firebird this afternoon?

Shirley, are you sure they didn't film 'Agon' this afternoon? The cameras were certainly there, and the announcement tonight on 'Front Row' stated that 'Stravinsky Staged' would be televised, which implies that all three ballets will be shown.

There was a programme slip announcing Burleys injury. I thought Cope was absolutely magnificent at both performances. Only Firebird and Noces were filmed this afternoon - I am sure NYCB have the copyright on Agon films

So they'll be showing Cope on the telly? That is *so* cool!!!
I have always thought Benjamin is very good in birdy roles - her Princess Florine is excellent and from what I could see her Odette/Odile was good to (but I was right up in the Gods and I have terrible eyesight)

What struck me about Benjamin's Firebird was not only her dancing but also her big black eyes ! She was so wild and showed no emotion, which is, I think very important as the Firebird has no soul. She really took my breath away yesterday.

Well, I hope not, actually. Not that I've anything against Cope, you understand, it's just that Leanne was so stunning on the first night that I hope it's that performance which will be televised.

The cameras were there but there was nobody working them for Agon. As previously said it is probably because of the Balanchine Trust.

Special mention must go to Romayne Grigorova (forgive spelling if wrong) who as the bridegroom's mother in Les Noces returns to the same role she played in the original 1960s restaging! Isn't that incredible?

It was indeed lovely to see Romayne getting a curtain call for once - and of course she was as always in the final scene of Firebird, not to mention the hunt scene in Giselle, and warm-up classes for the opera!!She must be the longest serving RB dancer still performing - as Romayne Austin she was in the post-war company! She really deserves some more credit in the programme, maybe as a guest character artist. A treasurable presence indeed!
