"Don't let him go quietly!"

Last night I was at R and J at the ROH and it occurred to me that it was probably the last time I will see Irek Mukhamedov dance this, certainly with the RB. (It was fine - only one does miss Durante - for me, the beautiful Yoshida lacks passion, but there you go.) Without the mass defection to Japan who knows where he would have been left... ANYWAY - it called to mind the utterly EVIL way the ROH cast out Wayne Eagling - remember, he danced his last in a TRIPLE BILL? Ten years ago this month ... Is the new director likely to bring back Mayerling to give Mukhamedov a swansong? Or will he just disappear after one last Giselle or whatever? He has made such an amazing contribution to the company, and I feel has been badly treated recently - I know I am not alone in this. He's guesting now - but for Irek's fans he is still so much a part of the company. Does anyone know what the future holds for him at the Garden? Or whether we can do a bit of barracking to get some decent roles for him to retire on when he does decide to go. I don't want him to go like Durante did - anyone have any views? Or prepared to start lobbying for them (finally) to recognise his contribution.
PS 400 pics of Dowell, one of Madam - am I the only person who feels a bit more could have been done FOH to mark her passing?

I am very much in agreement with all that Christian has said in this posting.
That Anthony Dowell was a dancer of some excellence is beyond dispute but in his role as Director of the Royal Ballet he was far less succesful in several aspects. Not least the fact that so many excellent and well loved dancers just faded away from the company with no apparent recognition whatever. This is particulary ironic when compared with the vastly expensive and much publicised Knight at the Ballet to celebrate the Dowell departure.

I also agree with the above, he certainly deserves better. I have so much enjoyed watching him over the last few years. He is also the only dancer I have ever waited at the stage door to meet, and he was utterly charming!

I agree, too (except I thought Miyako was a bit of a revelation last Tuesday and not only danced beautifully - as always - but was really quite dramatic too). I am really sorry about the way Irek has been treated. He has given so much pleasure to his fans over the last 15 years or so (I will never forget the first time I saw him do Spartacus at the Coli) and has made an enormous contribution to the Royal Ballet. Like the poster above, I have been fortunate to meet him on a few occasions - including acosting him on the tube - and he was charm itself. He still has so much to offer - particularly as a partner and actor - I can't understand why he is not used more. Apart from the wonderful Kobborg, I don't think there is any other male dancer at Covent Garden who I would rather see.

I was interested to hear Leanne Benjamin at the Ballet Association, when asked whether it was likely that Mayerling be revived, say probably not, because they had no male dancers that could do it! ???? I think we all rest our case.

I, too, agree with all the above. The RB seem to have an particularly bad blind-spot about how to treat (and keep) some truly great male dancers. Lets hope things improve in the future, but they do appear to be a bit slow to learn from past mistakes on this front.

Yes I have really missed their partnership in this ballet and Giselle. If these are his last performances in the roles it would have been a bonus to have him dance them with Durante. It is a shame that she left and in a sense 'deserted' the partnership. She always praised him highly in her interviews.
I am so disappointed not to have got tickets for the Dowell gala as that will probably be Durante's only London performance this year. A shame they are not going to televise it.

which papers were you looking at for the 400 piccs of Sir Anthony , as all the main tabloids had heaps of piccs of Madam , and none of Dowell...as for him letting dancers go , he can't exactly chain them to the floor , if they want to go and spread their wings he can't stop them!
you all know my views on the fact that Dowell shouldn't be going, and i'm sure Stretton will ruin everything,in will come more modern stuff along the lines of "that house will burn " which was a waste of talent.I doubt we will see any of the classics!i think in a years time from now you will all be complaining ..except Dowell won't be there for you to have a go at!

At least Wayne Eagling was actually given a tribute on the cast sheet that evening, something which has been conspicuous by its absence at every other principal's final performance I've been to since

If Irek announced his retirement, as he really should while still in good form, then I am sure he would receive a proper farewell. I will never forget Lesley Colliers last performance, some weeks after it was announced she would go. Maybe the last Giselle will be his last full length role with the RB??
