"Carlos Acosta"

I saw Carlos Acosta dance Coppelia with Leanne Benjamin on TV.I thought he was a good dancer and the Royal Ballet at the moment lacks good male dancers(I don't say there are not but proportionally to the female dancers , there is a lack).I don't understand why the Royal Ballet doesn't want him.Does he have problems because he is coloured?

As far as I am aware the RB do want Carlos but like a lot of dancers now he has made a decision to become a quest and fly around the world dancing wth different companies!

I'm sure colour has nothing to do with it!

I'm sure Shirley is right that Carlos was made very welcome at the RB. The more that that the RB can get of him the better, but he is such a brilliant dancer that he is in great demand elsewhere.

The 'Diana and Acteon' pdd at Sadler's Wells showed that he is still getting better. I'm certainly hoping that we can see more of him at the RB next season.

My thought, regarding RB male principals, is that there really hasn't been any British male dancers who have reached the same caliber as Sir Anthony Dowell, when he was a performer. He was simply brilliant and a great danseur noble. There seems to be Darcy, Sarah, amongst the girls, but amongst the men, hmmm...Jonathan is good, but I'd like to see someone getting as good as Anthony.

in the nicest possible way it sounds slightly odd to be reffereing to principal dancers by their 1st names!!!!

If you go a lot it seems entirely natural to talk about dancers in the more friendly terms. I alwasy find the formallity of American reviews - Miss Bussell etc - very strange and at total odds with the way the way they often use first names in person esp when they don't know you from Adam!

I think we will all regret seeing less of Carlos (..my wife will in particular......hmmm). As far as the racial discrimination issue goes -the man himself is really the only person who can comment. Incidentally most of my 'coloured' mates prefer to be called black.

As Shirley has commented, I really feel that he has decided to experience more of the world -a sad loss to us all in the UK.

The lack of male dancers has historically plagued the art of ballet. As Balanchine is famously quoted to have said 'Ballet is Woman' and women seem to be much better at it than men -perhaps because there are more women dancing. Sadly I am a bit too young to have seen Anthony Dowell dance but he is certainly impressive on video. As far as current (resident) male principals go Jonathan provides consistent quality, Inaki is more and more impressive each time and Johan K has always been a favourite.

As far as referring to dancers on first name terms goes, its hard to remain so formal with such a lovely bunch of people. I met Jonathan (Mr) Cope recently and he is such a nice bloke. I stuttered and spluttered between calling him 'sir' and 'Mr Cope' but he calmly said 'call me Jonathan', although admittedly as far as Sir Anthony goes I would refrain from calling him 'Tone'....
